air filter intake aftermarket

I'm about to start experimenting with this, just for a bit better of fun and maybe a slight induction noise gain. I doubt very much that there's anything to be gained in power.

Anyway, not being a fan of "induction kits", I bought a PiperX filter to try out first and it arrived today so I'll let you know how I get on :-)

Hi, is it a panel filter?
Rob

Been thrrough all this palaver and bollox with an e46 m3, arial atom and an e36 323i. It's not even a 'marginal gain' and just made me worry about contaminating the maf on each car. Stick to stock.

Hi Rob, yes it is :-)

I only really trust PiperX or Green Cotton panel filters as they're the only ones I've ever used and they've lasted. I always go for a panel as induction kits cost a fortune to get a proper one that stops the engine drawing in hot air from the engine bay.... and I don't really see the point in spending a fortune for very little power gain!

Have you got any kind of after market filtering on your Z and if so what has your experience been? :-)

At around £140 I can justify experimenting with the VRSF DCI dual cone filter or the BMS one from burger.....out of these two which is the prefered?

I have a BMS DCI installed (I posted a thread on it a few weeks ago).

No real gains noticed, feels a touch more responsive but nothing quantifiable. It does have more intake noise though which is why I bought it and for that alone I am happy. It also looks quite smart in the engine bay.

General consensus is a standard car will not benefit at all from one but at higher boost levels it may give a little more power.

Verdict on my PiperX panel filter is that:

- there is no noticeable induction noise improvement (no massive surprise for a turbocharged engine)
- no noticeable power gain on my standard mapped car (which I never expected there to be anyway!)
- no noticeable change in throttle response

In summary, I wouldn't bother! I enjoyed playing though! :D

Have a k&n panel filter and pretty much the same as above. Maybe a slight improvement on throttle, but no noticeable bhp increase.

Not sure they do many induction kits for an e89.

Wouldn't mind one for the induction noise. I quite enjoy that and isn't it all about what makes driving fun for you.
