Had an interesting journey into work today after the glass fellout of my wing mirror! Joining the motorway was intersting!!!!!!

It looks like the glass just fell off the rubber type pad below it, can i just glue it back on? Is the pad underneath what heats it up as i don't want too loose the heated function on the wing mirror?

yep had the same myself a while back.

it's basically the glue that fails. they only put one shitty blob on!

the black rubber pad is the headed bit, so you should still have that in tacked.

all i did was buy a £8 replacement of ebay and stick it to the pad with a heat resistant glue i found in tesco.

i presume bmw will replace the whole unit, including the heat pad. hence the price!

the ebay glass isn't the best quality, but fits perfectly, and once on you can't tell the difference.

just don't do what i did and buy the glass with a fillament stuck to the back, you don't need it. took me ages to remove it.

Just had a quick look on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-Z4-02-08-DOOR-HEATED-WIDE-ANGLE-MIRROR-GLASS-PLATE-/330459264674?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM

Not sure if it will look exactly as the original but got to be worth a try for less than £15!

plenty here:

like i said, you wont need a heated one if you still have the plastic/rubber matt bit still in the housing.

Mine both did this, drivers side smashed so bought the full unit from BMW, pain in the ass to fit, much better to glue on if u can as I did this on the passenger side and it works perfectly.

Thanks everyone, also interesting to hear that fitting a new BMW one with the heated pad is a pain, in that case I am going to pop into a local supplier who says he has replacement mirrors for the in stiock, fingers crossed it will be OK.

Now fitted for £19.99 including adhesive tabe which is already on the back of the miror  a bit better than £120 plus VAt and the hassle of trying to fit the BMW one with the heated pad.

I must say there didn't appear to be much adhesive on the original mirror, and the guy in the shop says he gets quite a few Z4 owners with this problem, not very impressive from a supposed premium brand manufacturer

I came here to search for this exact issue as my mirror popped out at 20mph yesterday too!

Which shop, location etc.....maybe we can give him some more custom?

Here's a link to the shop i got my mirrir from

I had this too, shut the door it dropped and smashed, the backing was fine as was the heated part. I replaced it with an aftermarket £10 piece of glass made for the Z4 off ebay as opposed to £80 dealer wanted for the whole bit (heater backing included) Its perfect apart from the fact the lower bottom cut line on the glass has not been precision cut with a rounded edge no one else notices this except me haha my father thought i was crazy when i pointed it out :D It does include the black line and the magnification part exactly like the bmw one which is perfect so not just a piece of cut glass!

Yep same here. Got my cheapie from eBay and whilst it is definitely cheap looking at the edges it does the job. I'll get another one of the same type if the other mirror pops off at some point (checked recently and it seems nice and stuck...for now).

*Cure your shaky mirror*!!

Just for reference - If your mirror is shaking/vibrating then that mean it wants to fall off one day!

What I did with mines is just rip it (The mirror Glass only) off the backing - Came off easily as obviously there's not much adhesive holding it on.

I then used Double sticky sided, waterproof and high temp resistant foam pads. They are about 3mm thick, black in colour and about 15mm squared. I used about 8 to 10 around the edges and center. Job done, no messing about with glue. It's stuck on solid now. I'll keep an eye on it but it doesn't look like it'll fall off any time soon.
Available from Halfrauds.

Update:

Glass is still stuck on strong.
Car has been through storms, snow and sleet. Recently the mirror has been covered in ice too!

i had the same when my car was in warranty an bmw said it wasnt coverd an they tried to charge 120+vat for the glass an fitting on top, so ebay came to the rescue for me to with glass for £12 an you cant tell the difference
jobs a good one :D
