Hydraulic Lifters

Had a problem this morning where the hydraulic lifters were noisy.

Called local dealer who advised calling BMW breakdown in case driving caused more damage.

BMW breakdown were with the car 10 minutes and advised that it was just due to car not being driven for a week. But said to keep an eye on it.

Anybody else had this problem (2006 2.5si). If so how do you advise dealing with it:

1. let it idle
2. drive cautiously

Dealer is keen to know if it does happen again, and I have advisedthat I am not going to use it for a week in a months time, but any comments you have are welcome.

sometimes let mine sit for two or three months at a time in the winter.
every now and then I get some lifter noise when I re start. seems to always work itself out. Just keep an eye on it

I drove the car gentley for around 1 mile but noise had not gone away.

Wanted to stop earlier, but was not safe to do so.

are hydraulic lifters the same as valve tappets?

try some thicker oil, it may help with the noise if its due to leaky tappets. does the noise go away when you increase the revs?

Louis, The car has only done 2,500 miles, so if there are any concerns, it's going back to the dealer to sort.

Dealer seemed quite concerned to know if it happens again, i'm just concerned how long it took to refill the lifter

Wondermike it seemed like a single tappet noise consistent from start to finish, just getting faster etc with increase in RPM.

The only reason I started my journey was I though it would stop as soon as I drove a short distance.

I guess I am going to have to wait and see.

Trying to remember, I do recall my 3.0 being a bit tappety every now and then, but I never really thought too much of it at the time. I suppose as long as it doesn't do it too often then it should be OK.

I hear the tappets for the first 2-3 seconds before hydraulic pressure pumps them up. I was concerned at first but a thorough google of the topic shows that it's not uncommon for the 3.0 engines. I would probably worry if it lasted a couple of miles...

Update for you sooner than expected.

Did it again this morning after 3.5 miles still to noisy for my liking so called BMW breakdown. Engineer phoned to say he wasn't coming as the car was drive-able. (The dealer is only half a mile from where i live), but again i didn't want to drive further than necessary as the noise could lessen.

Anyway he came out in the end, and took for drive probably past the dealer, but would not deliver to the dealer. My wife couldn't take the car as we have 2.5 year old twins and I was at work.

I got the impression from my wife that he was sitting on the fence regarding the tappet noise, however he did point out a whirring noise which i had noticed that sounds like a supercharger.

Anyway dealer has now collected and BMW Breakdown have provided courtesy car (no cost, unlike one from the dealer)

So waiting to here from dealer with there findings. Have suggested they keep the car overnight in the hope it will be worse again in the morning.

Yeah, sounds awesome at idle. Can't even imagine what it drives like. Perhaps not MPG, but smiles per mile, I would think is huge!! :driving:
