Hi had my Z4 four weeks and a few issues, the section trim on the main console under the hand break is badly marked, I do not now how!! previous owner i read articles about covering trim but not replacing the console sections.

I would like to replace this section – (see photo) and the silver plastic trim with an aluminium version could you please give guidance regarding how this done and how difficult the job is and where to source the parts – I would assume a scrap yard.

Many thanks

So far with Z4 I had light regarding brakes, warning light regarding airbag!! Still got airbag light on another project!!, changed RF to normal tyres – ride better !!, designing my own wind defector in Perspex, I put up some images later and the design template.

Great Fun

Removing/replacing the trim in the centre console is quite involved as it required the removal of the entire centre console and some of the rear bulhead interior panels.

The aluminium trim is held on by 30 screws so do not even try to prise off from above.

The trim pops up on ebay or here, other than that it's a breakers, but not sure how much luck you will have there.

You can remove JUST that small rectangular piece (under the brake lever) with the console in place.

First, remove the plastic trim from around the gear selector. The piece that has the flasher and lock button.

Then that small rectangular piece just slides out towards the front. Depending on how much dirt and coke etc. has been spilled in to the grooves, it might be a little tough to slide at first.

To replace the side pieces, actually they are one unit, the complete center console must be removed from the car. It is not hard but time consuming.

Hi great i replace that section. I probably go to a scrap yard and see if they let me take that section !!

Ideally i take the aluminium trim section on top at same time !!! - job late date

Regarding your instructions

Remove the plastic trim from around the gear selector. The piece that has the flasher and lock button -

How do you take that piece of trim out??

Many thanks

I would suggest removing the leather gerknob gaiter first then using your hand to remove the surround instead of using a screwdriver which could damage one of both bits of trim.

funny enough ive been sat in my car at lunch n pulled all this apart just to see how easy it would be...

think im going to respray mine

If you search back, you will see some pictures of when I repainted the Roadsters. I have since repainted it again but a different type/finish of paint.

Hi

I go to the scrap yard and see what they got , does not look a long job - thanks

Hopefully they got the top alumium section in as well !!

Any body seen any post regarding replacing the top section trim? seen a new one for about £68 on ebay

i seen some posts regarding covering it but not certain regarding quality of finish!!

I belive it a three hour job and lots of screws great fun !!

Many thanks

Al

I think it was said before, but if you are going to replace the top trim, the whole center console must come out of the car.
It's not hard.

I have just purchased all these platic pieces that go under the handbrake mine was also scratched... will not be putting phone/money in there again!

£13.13 51.16.7.026.223 is the small cover piece directly under handbrake
£22.50 51.16.7.026.221 is the piece that fits around the gear lever and most easiest to pull off.
£15.41 51.16.7.041.704 is the piece that I have yet to install as you need to take out the aluminium trim to get to it as it fits under it and acts as the walls to the tray under the handbrake.

Also

Al lot of money for a few bits of plastic, but worth it I think!

Now for the main question..... how to I go about taking off the aluminium centre trim imn order to fit the new piece underneath? Anyone know the order or the first piece plastic piece to pull off to access the 30 odd screws?

Thanks

Shane.

Hi great i order the £13.13 51.16.7.026.223 is the small cover piece directly under handbrake. Many thaks for info

Realize this is an older post, but I have the same issue.
Does anyone know the paint code/color used for the trim pieces?

It's a little silly that the silver painted interior parts (door grab handles, steering wheel trim) have clear coat, but the darker gray painted interior pieces (under the e-brake, around the mirror controls, ash tray, center vent, and radio) don't have anything to protect them. I have wear marks under my e-brake, on the sunglass holder, and around the volume knob on the radio. Want to pull it all out and give it a respray.

Shipkiller - happen to have any pics of your painted interior?

No problems i still have not got round to doing the part which the cover piece fits into e.g the plastic that sits under the aluminium trim ... you need to take apart the entire car it seems and after studying it for a while i cant see where to start! Hopefully there is someone on the forum who has done this and can advise :D

holy crap its been a year! I need to start putting stuff on the car I buy

My radio also has these marks and the trim pieces but not sure i could replicate the colour of the trim as its a metallic kind of grey?

Pretty sure the paint be replicated. Just need a good piece of unscratched trim and bring it to a paint mixing shop that can scan the trim into a computer and it will match it.

Even if it's off a tiny bit I don't see the problem since I'll be painting all the trim pieces. The only thing written on the painted part of the radio is "BMW Business Radio" or something to that effect.

And if that fails we can always just paint it black like on 2006+ interiors.

Great let me know how you get on... i should have a full set of worn ones in that case when i finally figure out how to dismantle the whole centre console. I replaced the pastic piece, the plastic around the gaitor and have sitting in here the whole other bit of plastic. My radio is also a little worn so that would be the one Id want spraying . There seems to be no screws visible or anything to get this main plastic piece off it has me stumped.
