2004 Z4 SE 2.2 DSC Warning Light Problem

Hi,

I know there are other threads relating to this problem but I was wondering if any one had dealt with this issue recently as I believe other repair options may now be available?

The problem is the orange hand brake warning light coupled with the orange ABS/DSC light on as a pair. Took the car to a local autoelectrician and the dreaded 5E20 fault relating to the pressure sensor seemed to be the problem. I have had the tracking done as someone suggested that it may be the issue as I had 4 new runflats fitted about a month ago as well as brake pads.

Obviously I wish to avoid the horror story of a £1800 Dealer bill but I have seen snippets that a repair kit may now be held by BMW? Any advice given would be very appreciated as very recently becoming a victim of the Governments Austerity plans means repair options are limited lol.

Hi Spandex I have the same car and the same probs 2004 2.2se 32000miles. tried out abs today seems ok also tried dsc on loose gravel seems ok. Are we being set up by bmw really want to fix this myself. We must keep in touch on this one.new tyre last week and new pads done myself then drove to scotland light took 550miles to come on real pain,but not going to get me down.if we can cure this ourselfs we are in the money. :headbang: ps you can change the colour on the brake one one notch on the hand brake will turn it red.
 
I'm following this one too, as i have the same issue 2005 2.5

I can sometimes reset mine by starting the car, full lock left, full lock right, switch off and restart. But it always comes back a few days later. :headbang:
 
Hi Guys,

Seems like its a sticking pressure valve. When mine was hooked up to the computer it was showing + 20 on one side and -1.5 on the other! (this would mean the car thought it was sliding sideways!!!) Mine also dissappears only to return a few days later, it appears that it frees itself and then sticks agin - you theory on the lock may be spot on in that it resets itself once moved to the limits.

Going to contact BMW this week to see what they have to say, not hopeful for a cheap solution though :(

the DCS warning light you have displayed, when it comes on, do the Revs limit or does the car act as normal?

im having a simular issue?
 
Hi,

There is no limitation to the car performance in normal operation, what I am assuming is that in a loss of traction sition or heavy breaking I would not have traction control or ABS. Is your limiting then?

anybody have any luck with this yet?

this combination of lights came on and ruined my afternoon today... obviously not got any error codes yet :(

Can be as simple as resetting the steering angle sensor. Main dealer did mine on warranty but the bill would have been £35 had I have paid.

Hi all,
I've had the same problem on my 2.5 that I've only had for 6 weeks. After reading some of the horror stories about this on various forums I was starting to regret my purchace . . . but after a trip to a friendly specialist and a £48 scan it was found that one of the brake pressure sensors had packed in ( there are 2 of them that stick out from the bottom of your brake master cylinder - either a brass or silver colour -and they've got electrical connectors clipped to the ends )
The new sensor's costing me £80 + fitting that they estimate will take an hour but while they're working in the area they going to change the brake fluid for another £20.
All in All Im in for around £200 which is a lot easyer to swallow than the 2K bills that people are talking about if the DCS pump fails and I now know that this was the only fault that the machine found so I can sleep easy again.

Hope this helps some of you out a bit if you're stuck.

stealer diagnosis - both pressure sensors have failed ...

ready to relieve me of £546 :cry:

oh and just to add to the injury - N/S Rear spring snapped :o
 
Sorry to hear that as well Gannet, mine goes into BMW Bath on Tuesday of next week, not optomistic either. BTW both my rear springs were shot when it for MOT last time, in fact half of one was missing, another common fault on Z4's apparently!

I am also not looking forwards to my conversation with the Bath BMW people either - last time it went like this:

Morning, dropping off my Z4, booked in as the parking sensors no longer work

No worries sir, we will have a look.

3 hours later.........

Hi, have you managed to find out anything?

Yes sir, your parking sensors do not work.

I knew that already, I wanted to know why they dont work?

Oh, that will need another booking sir, that will be £70.00 plus Vat for labour today sir.

unbelievably incompetent...

bizarrely my warning lights had actually extinguished themselves, but got them to check it out anyway. They did offer not too, but at the end of the day they would probably just come back on again - or worse not and the abs/dsc not work when you need it.

wasn't shocked by the spring per se (had the O/S one go before) but what I find odd when the springs go is that the is NO discernible difference to the car handling :?
 
After trying the old WD40 and spraying all electrics plugs under brake servo,this worked for ten days,lights came back on again :headbang: Said befor wont let it bea :thumbsup: t me so as i was painting brake calipers last week cleaned out all of the wheel sensors at the wheel also cleaned the little black box that the brake and wheel sensor join up in,one was full of mud and dirt,cleaned out all of them sprayed with WD40 switched on all lights out.Driven now for a week no lights yet,Fingers crossed.
 
Hi,

Went to Bath BMW today. Fault diagnosed as failed DSC sensor 1. Cost of diagnosis = £40.00 (did include car wash!)
Booked in for next Wednesday for replacement sensor @ £270.00. A lot better than the £1.4k others have had to pay, still £300 notes in total though for a part which I guess you don't expect to fail so readily as they do.

Will post when work is done.

I decided to have a diagnosis done whilst mine was in for service. 2 DSC pressure sensors faulty (diagnosis free of charge)

Part number: 34 52 1 164 458 230euro the pair
Total repair cost including labour 380euro :driving:

I'll send the bill to BMW France given my car has super low mileage, they may pay something towards it...
