Advice on after market wheel companies needed.

My mate has recently bought himself a D class Cabriolet and needs an after market set of wheels.

He's concerned that some companies wheels are prone to breakage - can anyone advise which are the reputable companies whose products are worth buying?

Thanks all.

Anyone know any companies worth looking at?

A pal went to Revolution in Gateshead for his set of winter wheels and tyres - he was suitably impressed

Use a reputed wheel supplier such as http://www.cmwheels.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=62_361 & there's no reason why a decent set of rep wheels should be any more likely to buckle or break than OEM ones .
Ive had 3 sets from these guys with no issues on any http://www.lkperformance.co.uk/

I bought mine from CM Wheels after seeing a few recommendations on here but I have to say I'm disappointed with the quality.

My advice would be to go and see the wheels in person before you buy.

Thanks for all the advice fellas - My mate is still looking.

He found that the standard fitment on his Merc E Class (on 19 inch) was the same width wheels back and front but different tyre widths fitted - had it confirmed at Merc dealership :o

Thanks again for the info

Did you buy branded or no name reps ?
I did order a set of no name CSLstyle reps from BMautosport that had a pisspoor paint finish so i sent them back but both Axe & Calibre aftermarket wheels ive had were both decent quality paint & build

Hi Stu, what was disappointing about them ? I was going to order a set of csl reps from them in a couple of weeks or shouldn't I bother ?

I bought no name ones from CM Wheels and the paint finish is really poor. They looked dull when they arrived but I thought it was maybe because they were indoors and they would look better in proper daylight. A few weeks later I got the tyres fitted and put them on the car and you can see clearly that the fronts are a slightly different colour to the rears and they look grey, not 'silver'.

I took them to a reputable refurbisher and he said there's barely any silver paint on them and what you're seeing is actually the primer. He said I'd be wasting money refurbishing them and would be better off buying a brand name.

I emailed CM Wheels with a complaint and they ignored it.

Lesson learnt for me: don't buy cheap (£500!) replica wheels without seeing them first!

Wow, I'm surprised as I've only ever heard good stuff about them on other sites especially M3 cutter where I used to hang out, do they have a shop front do you know to be able to collect the wheels or are they mail order only ? What did you do with the rims in the end paint them ?

Just checked out their weds it page properly and I see their based in Ian so viewing before I buy is out of the question

I've seen them recommended on here a few times, that's why I used them. To be honest I don't really have an issue with them, it was a bit rude to ignore my email but the wheels have been fitted and used so there's not much they could have done anyway. From what Mr Wilks says it seems that this is a common problem with replica wheels.

I would strongly advise against buying some off the internet without seeing them in real life. The refurbishers I went to had similar 'silver' wheels for a similar price and we took one outside and compared them to mine- the finish was night and day, theirs was glittering and gleaming in the sunlight whereas mine just look grey!

I've left them on the car for now, they don't look terrible, just a bit dull and cheap. I'll probably get them re-done properly when I need to change the tyres.

The ones i returned were not only different shades the paint finish itself was piss thin & certainly not worthy of £500 (19s)

whereas the Axe 19s for not much more were more than impressive on paint finish & felt quality made

i think its unfair to categorise all non OEM wheels as reps when many companies produce quality as good as Oem if not better
