Had to go to Italy (Tuscany) for a friend's wedding. Decided to drive :driving: . Left to my own devices I'd have probably got lost or driven boring roads but thankfully Dave (Road Trip) has a little experience in these things and being a top chap sorted a route down and back

Day 1 - leave work, catch ferry, find somewhere to spend the night in France - Lille.
Day 2 - drive through France, Belgium, Luxembourg (city for lunch), France, Germany and into Switzerland. Stopped the night at Lucerne, stunning location for a stopover.
Route: Google Maps
Day 3 - In Switzerland - Kleusen, Fluela passes then into Italy for the Stelvio Pass. Down to Milan and then on to Tuscany.
Pretty much fried the brakes (EBC Greenstuffs) on the Kleusen and then the car packed up half way up the Stevlio.
Days 4, 5, 6, wedding stuff.
Day 7 - Through Italy, past Milan > Como and into Switzerland, there I drove to Thusis and then entered Thun into the sat nav and set of through the mountains. Not entirely sure which passes I did, but it was a great day :) Dave had planned a route but with the problems on the way down I decided not to do all of the passes he suggested, left it to the nav. Stopped the night in Saint-Avold.
Google Maps - think this is right
Day 8 - Get home.

On the way down I mostly took video footage, which I am still editing. Back was all pics. Here they are - quality is not great, I put the SLR on auto so I could snap some shots on the move.

Day 2, outside my hotel in Lille - saw the night porter out admiring the zed :)

Lucerne - had supper in on of the restaurants on the water, lovely spot.

Before shot - Day 3, hotel car park. Shiny!

The Stevlio Pass. Car had stopped working quite a way down, this is taken from a car park while it cooled off.
Italy4.jpg

View up the Stelvio from the car park.

The car cooling off - tried to give the impression of a photo shoot rather than an emergency stop.
Italy6.jpg

Same car, same car park.
Italy7.jpg

Made it to the other side...
Italy8.jpg

Ah, some more twisties.

Day 7- Just down from the Gotthard Oberalp Arena, made a nice noise.
Italy10.jpg

Think this was the top of the Sustenpass
Italy11.jpg

Bad over the windscreen shot, but these tunnels were fun - one even had a waterfall off the side.
Italy12.jpg

A few minutes down, about 1,000ft down from 2 pics up.
Italy13.jpg

Another from the same spot.
Italy14.jpg

Couple random roads, after the passes… I guess the boring bits.

Day 8, before I left the hotel - about 1,800 miles and still looking good.

Video to follow.

Dave, thanks very much again for the routes. I think I'm definitely going back.

For statos, total trip was 2,289 miles :driving: :D

excellent! looks a great drive. A pal and I are thinking of doing San Bernardino Pass this summer, looks thrilling.

Thanks chaps, really was great fun.

petach, Taz, definitely worth doing. Lucerne is a great place to stop off too. I'm sure I'll be going back for a dedicated trip, rather than having to get somewhere :driving: I have to confess, I had almost as much fun on the long windy A roads as I did on the passes - especially the A13 coming back

Here's some video footage - cut down a lot to keep it "short" from the footage I took. And then again to fit onto YouTube...

Hope you like.

Got to ask though... how and why did your car overheat?

Not entirely sure - it was on my third pass of the day, pinging it from hairpin to hairpin. Although the engine temp was dead centre and there were no warning lights. Very odd. Link below has the details and some suggestions:
Revs dropped, engine cut out

I'm going to try and get it looked at on Friday... before heading up to Scotland for the meet :driving:

And yes, that trip was amazing :D

Bloody brilliant

Sounds like some great driving was done and some awesome pictures!

Im not much of a fan of black wheels, but it ties in so well with your lights and grilles and the silver body i cant imagine silver wheels would look good anymore. Absolutey superb 8)

:D

This is now a benchmark for me... although I'm expecting much the same experience from Ally's tour to Skye :driving: Minus the "breakdown" of course

Now these sort of road trips really show the benefit of having a convertible compared to a standard tin roof

I don't think you'll be dissapointed!

Looks like you found some great roads though - I did much the same route last year but managed to miss the Stelvio (I was in a Focus fully loaded with an audible speed limiter fitted on the passenger seat anyway, so would have been hard to really enjoy it!)

Watching that video's giving me twitchy feet though :)

Point me to the sunshine. I've got some driving to do :driving:

Great shots Matt! Some stunning scenery there. Looks like you had a brill time. I'd love to do something like that.
