Possible Group Buy - Brand new hard tops

This topic has been discussed in a couple of other threads, but as not everybody may have seen them, I thought that I would start a new topic here with a more meaningful title.

In a nutshell, BMW UK have stopped selling E85 hard tops other than "painted-to-order" at about £2,500 each. Second-hand hard tops seem to go for about £800-£900 on eBay. BMW Germany are now flogging the last of their stock in a selection of colours at knock-down prices on eBay.de (about £480 or £650, depending on colour), but they will not ship to the UK. The hard tops are brand new in box, guaranteed for 2 years and come with all the right bits.

I have been in touch with a number of couriers (through AnyVan), who have quoted me a range of prices from £225 to £480 to deliver a hard top from Munich to my house in Hampshire. I have just gone back to them and asked whether it would be any cheaper to ship each hard top if we were to buy 2/3/5 rather than just 1. (UPDATE - just had one response saying "£400 for 2 , £550 for 3, £650 for 4, £725 for 5", so if 5 of us went for it, it would be £145 transport per hard top).

These are the only colours that are now available:

  • Merlotrot (€599)
  • Toledoblau (€599)
  • Maledivenblau (€599)
  • Monacoblau Metallic (€799)
  • Hellrot (€599)
  • Tiefgrun Metallic (€599)
  • Flamencorot metallic (€599)
  • Montegoblau Metallic (€799)
  • Blau Metallic II (€719)
You can see the auctions here - http://www.ebay.de/sch/bmw-nl-muenc...odkw=z4&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313

If you are interested in joining in with a group buy, please read both of these threads first, as they will probably answer most questions - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=37544 and http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=34218&p=464646&hilit=munich+hardtop#p464646 (which includes photos).

I'll report back on the courier prices, but please add your name here if you are seriously interested. Please also say where in the UK you would want the hard top delivered. And if by any chance you have room in a large van that will be travelling from Munich to Hampshire, then you could become my new best friend :)

Try sending an email Jonen Shipping Ltd, when i tried this at the beginning of the year, he said that he would courier them back to the uk and then distribute them from their base

Well done for putting this together, as we've discussed over PM I'm interested too, & at £150 the courier makes a lot of sense.

Still tempted to take a van :driving:

Why not just take the car

That's my thought. There are times where I wouldn't mind having a hardtop bolted to my car, might save me from hypothermia. Being able to drop the top with three presses from the keyfob before I can even see the car means it's off in weather it really shouldn't be...

OK, I've had a few quotes for "multiples", but the one I quoted yesterday is still the cheapest (I will also try Jonen, as deka suggested). I'm keen to get this over and done with, so would like commitments rather than expressions of interest - otherwise I'll just buy one for myself and pass on the contact details for anybody else who want to go it alone.

The way it would work, I think, is that those of use who want to buy would individually purchase the hard top from BMW on eBay. You would let me know where you want the hard top delivered to - I'll pass the details on to the couriers, and hopefully they will let us each pay our own costs separately (e.g., if 3 of us buy, and the total courier price is £550, then we would each send the courier £183.33). Worst case is that everybody would have to send me the money for the courier and I'd pay them but I'd really prefer this not to happen!

I totally want one of these, but the shipping to California would prob be more than the top itself...
Sadly I think you are correct. It would also be somewhat ironic for car parts built in America to be shipped over to Germany, only to be shipped back to the US!

OK - it's decision time :)

OK - are you definitely in?

Where in Hampshire are you?

I need to check the colours but I'd be interested.
I'm in Winchester, but I'd be looking for the courier to deliver to wherever people want - I don't have any storage space. You could always buy a cheap (€599) top and get it sprayed.

No chance of getting one shipped to Australia is there?
Every chance, but it would probably cost more than the car is worth :|

i may be interested. Depends on pricing, and the courier would have to leave the hardtop in the box!

Delivery would need to be to Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Look forward to hearing from you with the quote
Yes, the hard tops would be delivered in sealed boxes, just as they left BMW. Courier costs will depend entirely on how many people go for this, which is why I'm now looking for firm commitment.

I'm definitely in for this... just need one that would look ok on a titanium silver one... of course until I got a respray when the funds allowed me to :D

firm commitment here.

get a toledo blue, dark shade of blue till you get it resprayed.

has anybody thought about getting the hardtop wrapped? might be an idea, don't know the price difference between the wrap or the respray but something you might want to consider.

Hard top prices (from eBay) are in €. Courier prices are in £.

Analysts have been suggesting that the euro is likely to weaken further against the pound (so the hard tops would get cheaper). If you wait, the risk you take is that BMW might sell out of your colour.

Why don't you all have a Z4 run to BMW and plonk them straight onto your cars and drive back with them. You pay a not :D :driving: dissimilar amount and get a long weekend away meaning her indoors will not have so many objections!!
