Both look as though they could do with a bit of TLC so there might be deals to be done

thanks for sharing Perry. both nicely priced for someone considering dealers are asking for 15-16K. I am loving the front spoiler decal on the one in wirral.

And the usual question - why on earth spec a non lux model.

They're vinyl and you can get them, and the lettering to go on the raised Alpina logo, for most models of Alpina - the dealers charge an arm & a leg but there's a guy on the Alpina forums who produces them himself at a much more agreeable price

I got two full sets for my car, one white, one graphite. I applied the white set but removed the white stripes soon after (application error, my fault) - once the white lettering gets too marked by gravel rash, I'll apply the graphite set

Which would you go for then Perry?
Difficult from ads, it could be either/both/none - as with any car of this age you have to buy on condition and history so I'd want to have a few conversations with the sellers, look over the documentation and have a good tyre-kicking session & test drive.

Same reason you get flimper-spec ///Ms...!

To a point I agree there, but Ms were often just bought because it was simply the top model at the dealer. The RS you would have to go out of your way to get so I would have thought you get a more enthusiast in there when ordering new.

That's true to a certain extent and, according to the data I have, Lux models were more popular by about 4:1 but there will always be some people who prefer their cars without too many 'fripperies'

There was also an oddity about the UK cars as, when first released, there was just under £4k difference in price between the Std and Lux models and the Lux pack was supposed to include
- Park distance control
- wind deflector
- Isofix child seat preparation
- Xenon headlights
- Cruise control
- Sat Nav
- Bluetooth phone prep
- 6-CD changer
- Headlamp washers
- Alpina leather dash and door trims
- Multi-function steering wheel

but I don't recall seeing a UK car that didn't have PDC, wind deflector, MF steering wheel and the Alpina dash/door trims so the £4k didn't get you as much as it would on a LHD car.

In addition, throughout the production run, Sytner pre-ordered a number of cars (some std, some Lux) so this may have influenced some people who wanted a car that was already delivered or in the pipeline rather than a longer wait for a factory order. Once production stopped, Sytner still had a some pre-ordered cars left, presumably any Lux models sold first so, at some point, people who wanted a brand-new car wouldn't have had any other choice.

All valid points I would say. The "wrong" people ordering them (i.e. sales people).

Very interesting read. You know your onions !

Ive seen the one on the Wirral advertised on and off for a few months, as the picture looks very much like Zedwheels avatar pic but it obviously isn't shifting easily.

There's another one that's going to be up at auction later this month

All I know at the moment is that it's a 2004 car in Sterling Grey, 79k miles and has had 10 services (5 BMW), and the last one was in Aug 2013 @ 78k, but I believe that it’s #030 which was the Autocar long term test vehicle

Considering there are so few of them really, I am surprised that there are always a fair few up for sale. Something like 10% of the total is always on the market at a guess?

I've never seen more than 7 or 8 available at one time - there were 167 RHD cars so that makes it less than 5%

Those figures do get distorted by the few poor-condition cars that appear for sale and hang around for ages. I estimate that there are about 10 persistent cars that keep reappearing for sale, either moved around in the trade or sold privately only to be put back up for sale fairly quickly.

Good condition cars that have been looked after tend to sell quite quickly and for decent money.

From what I've seen you Alpina owners are a funny lot too; 50% of the cars I've seen are fairly tired looking and 50% are absolute peaches. That may be simplifying the numbers but you know what I mean

One day I still need to scratch the Z4A itch but it would need to be Lux, if only for my OCD.

Some seriously good info on the roadster production -

@inkey couldn't agree with you more. They are hard enough to find as it is. And when you do find one, 50% chance it hasn't been looked after. I went to see two (yes only two) Roadster S's before I bought the MC. Simply because they were neglected.... :(

Well, we had a good look underneath Perry's Alpina at the Welsh meet and boy oh boy, the condition of it was appalling. Not a sign of wax underneath the front fangs, the inside of the side skirts had mud specs and the centre exhaust box had not seen polish for years

Sorry Paul

I'm looking to buy a scissor lift so I can give the underside some proper TLC

I can see it now, you and Cindy laying side by side underneath the car holding hands, looking lovingly at the shiny diff ...
