Its probably a marketing ploy, if you knew a better version was coming along people may hold off purchasing the Z4 twin turbo which is the new flagship. This would harm sales of the new model.
Then give it a few years the M spec will trundle along with the v8 that they claim will not fit

Might as well call it an AMG then.

I do believe that though, don't forget that it was 3 years before the //M showed up, and they genuinely weren't going to make one until they realised the demand. This time, with the SDrive 35i already making 5.0secs to 60, it's harder than ever to justify the development.
In some ways I hope they don't as it makes our cars rarer, but I have to admit I'd probably go for a V8 E89 M..

True, but it's all relative...I don't think a Z4M is less of a sports car than, say, an MGB because it's heavier. Modern cars always are and probably will continue to get heavier (more kit), but they have all the things you list too. For those who don't want all that, there are the Elises, VX220s and CSLs of this world. If lightness/nimbleness was the only concern in a sports car we would all have Exiges...
I'd agree though that firms would benefit from making these sodding folding metal roofs lighter...
They are absolutely right in not making one now given the economic downturn, but in a couple of years when the market has bounced up again, they'll be making one...
As has been stated before, the previous Z4M did not arrive until 3 years after the first Z4, and after the first facelift. 3 years is still a long way and much will happen in that time, also that M facelift stuff they talk about.

they cant have true m versions of the x5 and x6 and no true m version of the sports car in the pack. It will happen!
Interesting, in the article they say 'keen drivers may be disappointed', it sounds more SLK and less Boxster. 5.2 seconds from the twin turbo and a possible 'M' tuning pack with lowered suspension, better brakes and 326 BHP from a rechipped engine bringing that down to around 5 seconds.. That would fit with BMW's performance packs recently brought in for the 1 and 3 series.

It may end up being faster than most Z4Ms - assuming the mods that are available for the 135i work on the Z35i.

Yeah... that's all we need... another M-Sport package that allows the buyer a false sense of justification to slap on a poser M badge on the boot. :thumbsdown:
