Z4M Sat Nav Upgrade

Ok, so im sure that most owners out there have done this. After a quick look on the forum I cant find exactly what I need.

So basically I want to upgrade the Sat Nav Firmware to the latest version because mine runs the original, shipped with the vehicle (2006 Z4Mc). Is the firmware a BMW one or is it one someone knocked up in dark room? Does anyone have it and where did they get it from. Looking for opinions and experience, ive seen a few places offering the firmware for around £35 for my system which is the High version, which includes the 2011 maps but im guessing these are rips and are not OEM (obviously).

Saw this:
http://www.

Anyone got it? Just before I get one?

Thanks for your replies in advance

That is an illegal copy as well.

The firmware with the car is already V32 though? Mine is from 2007 and came with V32. What is the number on the right top of your screen as that is the release number?

I dont pick the car up until Saturday, so I cant tell you that. The firmware is V32.2 so it is a newer one, not too fussed about the maps I had planned to buy some 2011 OEM ones. Would the garage do the update? Obviously the main reason for buying it is the 7 digit postcode and the camera location that comes with the firmware.

Thanks

I thought to get the software updated a dealer must run it, and the discs only have the map information as the software doesnt run directly off the disc but from the computer. I dont know of any computer that would run its firmware from a disc. Similarly to updating the firmware on a computer.

No, without a firmware disk you can still modify your map disk with the POI that facilitates the postcode and speed camera updates.

Firmware can be downloaded for free from the xoutpost.com website, as that is hardware related and no license fee applies. However, the modified maps containing the cameras are copied map disk. The use of POI for post codes is not that great though.

Fantastic thats what I was after, its better than nothing in my opinion! :)
So is it just a case of ripping the disc putting it in and letting it update? Then il buy some new dics because the ones I have are 2006 :fuelfire:

How would you suggest updating the BIOS/firmware on a computer without having it on a disc of some sort? Even if you download it from the manufacturer's site, it's still on your hard disk, and most The BIOS/firmware suggests you update it from a bootable CD/floppy/USB stick. I've never had to take a computer to the dealer for a motherboard firmware update.

The newer iDrive systems with hard disks are updated via software either via USB/CD/DVD/dealer. The HD in the car is updated from whatever medium the dealer/customer chooses.

The older systems (in ours) requires either the dealer update or the CD/DVD in the Sat-Nav drive. The sat-nav data is on the DVD that's sat in the central cubby between the seats - and there is no HD for it to copy to (and probably the reason it sometimes crashes as it'll get quite hot).

The speedcams/postcodes on our systems make use of POIs, rather than having the postcodes embedded in the maps. Don't forget that the speedcams locations are not updatable without buying a whole new disc.

If you must go down this route then you may as well download the ISO from your local neighbourhood torrent site. And no, I don't condone it, but neither do I complain about the BMW maps and then go and buy/pirate them - I simply use a TomTom 1005 instead, which lets me customise it to my heart's content (along with an annual subscription to PocketGPS speed cam database, which is updated weekly and includes Continental speed cam alerts).

Right I see I assumed it had some internal disc space... like a small flash memory. So I assumed the firmware would install rather than run from a disc, and yes I would install it from a disc like I explained in my last post in a computer etc. But who apart from people on this site wouldn't go to a bmw dealer to see about an update of this sort? which is the reason I was asking for the advice. I will have a look around and see, if that is the case I would rather do it myself than pay £35 that in theory you can do for free.

The firmware update is installed from a CD-ROM disc, once updated the disc is removed (so it is loaded into the system's internal memory/hard disk whatever it is) and the map DVD put back in the drive.

Well thats what I assumed from the off, that wasnt the problem it was whether they were worth buying or doing yourself! by downloading and making a disc. Now im confused... It does say on the bmwnavi site that you get the update disc and the map discs, so from that I assumed you would put in the disc it ran the firmware then you put your maps disc back in...

Not sure what you are asking?

There are two elements. You buy a firmware disk and an illegal copy of a map disk.

The firmware disk is a one-use only CD, that updates the navigation computer. You will not need that again.

As the firmware can be downloaded, the question is whether it is worth it to you to let someone else burn it to a CD or you do it yourself.

The maps is a different issue altogether as I would not want to buy an illegal copy (that could cause issues on the satnav anyway with "frozen" systems).

The firmware update is simple to do yourself if you're reasonably computer literate. That link you had in your first post is not going to provide you with genuine discs so I would steer clear of that website. The firmware update CD is separate from the map DVDs and the people selling it on your link are clouding the issue by suggesting it is sold as a firmware update plus map update.

I would think though that if you were planning to buy the 2011 map DVDs from a BMW dealer that they could do the firmware update at the dealer free of charge. Perhaps ring them and ask. It's not a time consuming process. If not do it yourself if you are happy to.

Edited to add, just read that your system is already on v32 firmware (the latest). So all you need to do is buy the latest map DVDs from BMW.

Agreed  but worth a try if he needs the firmware update and is in there for a service or buying the latest map DVDs. Not just a turn up and ask for a firmware update at no cost scenario.
