tempted to do the dealership £100 diagnostic fee if it means i'll get a proper defined list of parts / work that needs doing, but will hang fire till after the indie has looked at it.

as i know i'll need to either replace entirely or fix manually the shelf, does anyone here know that the black rubber clamps are defninitely included in this part?
I think you will, as those clamps are not listed with a separate number.

Before you spend out on the diagnostic fee, why not ask on here if anyone is near you that may be able to help with reading the codes?
well that's what i was hoping, seeing as they're not listed as a seperate item you'd have to assume they come together. in regards to the help with code readings would it be best to make a seperate post? is there a section of the forum for it or shall i just dump my postocde here?
Given the current title, I'd think you may do better to start a separate thread to make it clear you need help.
But before you do, there's a thread somewhere called 'who's got Carly' or something similar. That may be a starting point as various members have advertised their willingness to help.
HQ of 'Norfolk Zed Rescue'.
Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Get onto Silverlake breakers, last time I looked they had 3 E89"s in stock.
Should be able to get the full shelf and bits from them as required.

what an awesome find, so new to provate car buying / selling breakers is a new concept to me. just spoke to a really helpful chap there and have described the part and pieces as best i can. am forwarding an email with actual photos for them to double check the finer details. there are 3 at different stages of 'breaking' so with a little luck i should be able to source it.

thank you so much for the idea.

you have any idea if the parts would differ much, or at all, between e89's from different production years? it's difficult to tell from the photo's that the breakers provide if there are size differences or anything...

I think the later lci cars had a cargo net fitted to the cover but it should fit the earlier cars as far as i know.

Pretty sure these are all universal fit across the production years of the E89.
You may gain a cargo net but dimensions are identical.

offered 90, got counter offered £130! with £50 delivery from EU that'd be more than a new one direct from BMW! Have haggled down and settled below £100 so all good. Now to fit it and hope the 'bongs' go away.

once that's done its 2 new salmon relays, a new battery, 2 new hall sensors for the boot lid mechanism thanks to this viewtopic.php?f=45&t=122832&p=1760631&h ... r#p1760631 post, then a recall notice appt at the dealers next friday, the tracking a day before that, then a professional paint detail and engine bay valet next month, phewf. that'll do it for a few weeks at least!

'10 E89 Roof Issue - Part identification (image)

Post by bte123 » Thu Sep 17, 2020 10:13 am

Update:

Ok, so I've received and fitted the parcel shelf / top panel trim and the piece was more than what I expected. I removed the entire shelf from the boot (four torx screws holding each of the sides in place towards the back of the boot, one set on each side) and placed the new shelf in. All fits perfectly and now the shelf is properly attached to the metal bar. (image attached)

Problems as they existed this morning....

On Opening / Lowering:

1) Press button beneath radio to lower roof - Instant Red Window icon 'BONG' on the dash, operation continues as normal with button still held down.

2) Boot lid doesn't open fully / quickly enough and mechanical arms of roof get caught when trying to lower into the boot - horrible crunching sound as they crack against the black plastic flaps of the boot lid.

This leads to me having to close the roof a little more, then open, then close, then open until boot lid has raised sufficiently. I tend to simply close the roof fully, and re open and boot lid miraculously opens enough and roof opens fine.

On Closing / Raising:

1) Press button beneath radio to raise roof - Hold button down until main roof section (directly above drivers head) reaches top of windscreen but stops a few inches shy of closing properly. At this point I have to release the button and re press to close that gap, and then maybe once more to fully cycle the close.

I'd say the 'bong' on opening is near EVERY time, boot lid doesn't open properly maybe 1 out of 3 or 4 times, hard to put an accurate number on it. The roof never finishes closing without me re pressing the button to do so.

Battery has been tested as 'absolutely fine and dandy' as recently as last week.

It's going into a dealers tomorrow for a recall notice, where would you start guys if this was your motor:

carly to get and clear error codes?
replace salmon relays?
replace hall sensors?

any 'next thing i would do' suggestions would be much appreciated.

don't get Carly, if you have a Windows laptop - buy a OBD2-USB cable and download BMW Standard Tools from Bimmer Geeks

clearing the codes will not help, roof related would com back, but knowing what is thrown is useful for sure

yes, you could replace the salmon relays and check the 4 hall sensors in the boot: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=122832 and the rest of the sensors on the picture
