How prematurely?

Mine have been on for over 8 years (62,000 miles) of what I'd call 'leisurely' driving.

Z4m engine mounts

I had the VT mounts on my car for about 7 years and 30k miles, when they were starting to show signs of wear with small cracks in the rubber. I've seen someone with similar issue and their mounts just suddenly fail soon after. I love the VT mounts, but the slight increase in NVH at idle was starting to bother me a bit. With that said, I don't quite like the spongy feel of the OE mounts, but had considered going back to OE. Ultimately, I took a gamble on the 034MS mounts and can vouch that they have the OE feel at idle and none of the spongy feel of the OE mounts when loaded - a great middle ground! I also liked that the 034MS mounts isn't fluid filled, so it won't fail/collapse like the OE will inevitably do soon after (the 034MS mount is essentially a solid version of the OE mount with the fluids being replaced with all rubbers). This is a win-win in my book :driving:

FYI - I did paired the 034MS motor mounts with the RE transmission mounts, as did with the VT.

I have a suspicion that you will like the 034MS mounts. It won't be as stiff as the VT mounts, but not as soft and spongy as the OE either. NVH will be eliminated (at least for me) at idle.

Look up for VT on M3s and you will see there are more reports than me. A few from Z4Ms also.

Harshness is the least of the issue. As I said, a few more idle rpms cure it. But when the cracked after 3-4 years and 20k kms… and as expensive as they are… they are no good IMO. I will post photos for you to see.

They are in a bin ready to go in about a week 👌

I didn’t notice any extra nvh with VT mounts and rogue engineering gearbox mounts.

Tbh, I’d happily go for something stiffer next time around, at least from an nvh perspective.

I’m happy for people to try the race mounts if they like - that are just sat in the garage doing not a great deal.

These came fitted to my Z4MC and were causing major vibrations at idle, the whole interior was shaking as if at 6 on the Richter scale. Once on the move, no vibrations at all and needless to say I changed them for OEM mounts and all is well once more :D

^^ exactly my case, my mounts are cracked and the car vibrated noticeably at 870rpm idle. it is fine at 970 - 1k rpm idle. again, the issue not idle speed, I actually prefer a higher idle to keep good oil pressure, the issue is them cracking so soon. those that have them should go and check closely, I never noticed cracks until I removed the aluminum shield to clean it, then was able to see the rubber is dry and cracked, though a bit less than the above

I replaced my mounts this weekend, went with 034MS mounts, very nice, much smoother vs VT, and the shifting is equally good, at least in street conditions. even cranking the engine for startup, and engine shut-off is smoother. and you save 60grams if that matters

Old mounts (20k kms and 4 years). Rubber is cracking

^^ Good to hear your positive results with the 034MS mounts and confirmation of my impression of them as you're only the 2nd person (other than myself) that I know of that are using them on the E85/E86 platform. I was made aware of the 034MS mounts on the E46M3 forum.

My VT street mounts looked pretty much like yours when I took them off and swap them for the 034MS about 1.5yrs ago. It didn't occurred to me to weigh them...so thank you for that info

i think i was one of the first that had these mounts and i actually tested the road and race versions for VT... i kept the race ones and sold the road versions. ive found these mounts to be absolutely excellent and in my application they've been put through ALOT of stress , not loads of miles but a whole heap of heat and twisting with a sprint track mostly use. I'm going to have a detailed look at mine this weekend and see how they look and report back.

I am loving the 034MS ones, before, I would not drive the car below 2k, it was too rough and grumpy, at 5-10km/h traffic when you let the car roll, if revs dipped below 1k, I would hear rattles, made me feel the car was falling apart. The new mounts allow me to drive from 900rpms to redline.

Now, I do live in a big city, so in stop-and-go traffic the VT mounts were awful. For those of you in the UK, think of driving though Downtown London in rush hour to get an idea.
