Any tips on buying a X1?
Hey forum,
I’m way out of my knowledge zone. Son has asked for my thoughts about buying this car, but I know nothing about X1 quirks, specs or values. Can anyone help?
He does typically mostly motorway journeys of 30-100 miles.

Advice? "Don't"
Seriously why does anyone need that car; "the niche that never needed filling"?

Well I am glad they invented that niche
We bought a 2019 X1 2.0 sDrive a year and a half ago. Done 35000kms since, 85 kms in total so far
Brilliant car, comfy, lots of room and economical. Definitely a class above comparable VW's
So far we have not had any issues.
Try to look for one with msport seats.
Most common issues you read about are leaking engine mounts, hanging sunshades and gearbox issues on certain models.
On the other hand they were rated amongst the most reliable cars by a UK car magazine recently

We had a 2 litre Diesel MSport a few years ago. It was well specced, comfortable, reliable and a pleasure to drive. My wife liked the fact it sat a little higher than a saloon car. I would be happy enough to have another one.
We are due to take delivery of a new Mini Countryman in March which is based on the X1 chassis and has fair bit in common with that car.

Don't know anything about X1s TBH but it looks like good VFM.
That is less money than I just paid for a same age 320i F31 with the same interior. The 'povvy spec' seats are actually really comfy.
If I wanted a 'high rise' 3 series, then that would certainly be on the list.

All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.
F31 320i. Good car.

Zedebee,
Looks smart and capable. Not keen on the colour exterior or internal.

We have a 2016 X1 18d, On the face of it, it drives well and is comfortable. It has a hitch and effortlessly pulls a bike trailer with a R1200rt...
Have had 2 issues in the last year,
Small spring in the gearbox/gearshift controller which throws an error of Car Not in Park when the gear is clearly in park. This requires the replacement of a 5 Cent spring. Expensive job in garage, but is a great DIY option, with lots of resources online. The centre conole has to come out.
Details at https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/showt ... 332&page=8 with a full step by step video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMhjjwtcoyw
Second issues was the Drivers side Heater Blend flap was over extended by actuator to lock it in cold air, which over the winter was a real pain...BMW wanted a new heater, new this and new that and may require a dash out....ouch.
Resolution for me, Actuator failedcalibration in ISTA+ - Lucky it was locked in one position so i just had to remove the actuator and unlock the flap as the actuator over extended the flap. To prevent it happening again, I refer to this thread on the mini f56 forum which shares similiar air controller - https://www.minif56.com/threads/drivers ... ost-887638 - full details...
As an insurance to prevent this happening again, Ibought a 3D printed adapter by Air Mech on that forum and it now prevents the actuator over extending going forward.
All home effort so minimal costs.

Any tips on buying a X1?
I test drove one in 2020 the road noise on the Motorway was horrendous very plasticky all over the car, I bought a X3. I was given a brand new one when BMW cocked my order up on my X3 I did 2k miles in it but could not wait the get my X3. Last year I had the new model when mine went in for service, not much changed, still cheap feel interior but road noise not to bad.

Thanks all for your help and advice. Son didn’t buy that one, but did buy another similar. Not my cup of tea, but he’s very pleased with it (apart from the insurance ).
