TIS is BMW's Technical Information System it's an online resource for which you have to be a registered user. It used to be free access but changed a couple of years ago so it can't be freely accessed now unless you were a user before the change. I was lucky and retained free access. They are very strict with usage and don't allow sharing links. Got pulled up by them for doing so in the past.

You need to press it into the recess on the rocker cover

The groove isn’t as deep as the gasket or is it meant to stick out of the groove too

It might help if you post the exact model of your car and check the required part number on Realoem parts site using the last seven letters and digits of your Vin number. Once we know that it can be checked on the AutoDoc parts site using the part number. It certainly looks to me you have the wrong gasket it should sit in the recess in the cover a lot more than shown in your photos.
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/select
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/
The Elring part number 382.711 you have shows up as a 2.0l E85 so if yours is a 2.0l then it should be right.

That doesn’t look like you’ve pushed it in at all? It will sit about 1-2mm out but compresses when you tighten it down

Thanks for the messages I spoke to company I bought it off and the one I ordered off their website is the wrong one even though it states it’s for my z4 2l they gave me the link to order it off eBay which I have done even tho the description says for an x3 so fingers crossed
I measured the groove approx 4mm the rubber to be inserted was 14mm so no way was it going to fit in
Frustrated z4 owner
