My dad’s first car was a new MG1100 reg UGR 211 in 1963. Until that time he could never afford one but he had been left a small bequest in an uncle’s will. That was just the time that I reached the age to learn to drive. Imagine his agonies when I was learning to drive on his pride and joy.

Doesn't surprise me you were a 'rich kid'!
when I was a kid, absolutely no-one I knew had a German car, ever. They were for the 'rich people'. It was Ford, Vauxhall, BL (Rover, Triumph, Austin, etc) and the odd Toyota or Datsun.
We were deemed to be 'posh' cos we didn't live in a Council house and had an old Celica!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.
F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!

There were very few British cars in NL as they were not cheap and terrible quality (standard jokes about what would be missing depending on strike days).

My Dad’s first car was a Ford Consul 375 (?) back in the 60’s.
I had only just passed my test, I was only allowed to drive it when he needed a lift to and from the pub. Great lolloping beast of a car, bench seats, 3 gears, no synchromesh.

lets see, the first car my dad had was a Vauxhall Astra GTE 16v, with the electronic dash. I remember my dad scared a mate of his when he took it north of 100mph on the A329M, which took some commitment in a car with 'only' 160ish bhp.
after that he had a 2000 Subaru Impreza WRX from new, which was really formative in my love of cars - i was 14 when he got it, and he had it for nearly 20 years. super cool cruising down to my grans in it, seats were great and the turbocharging was like a jet engine. i always said that if he ever sold it i wanted first dibs on it, but he kept it for so long that it was somewhat rusty by the time he eventually got rid of it. i did get to drive it once, but the brakes weren't particularly well maintained, it didnt really stop very well...
he's now settled in to his retiring years and bought a volvo of some description...

The most stand out one is a metallic blue pristine VW Beetle
He also had a number of Cortinas/Sierras etc. I do remember an old Renault 14 he bought for something like 25 quid what an utter basket case of a car that was. Death trap on wheels.

My dad's Mk 3 Cortina, 4 door, metallic pale blue, black plastic seats that burnt your legs to hell in the summer.buzyg wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 5:56 pm I can think of several. Mk2 Cortina first car I remember doing over a ton in. Mum was diving, kids were stood on the back seat egging her on. Wonder where I get it from. Hillman Hunter 2ltr. That was the car I learnt to drive in on Southport beach. Austin 3lr lovely thing. Interior like a period roller, wall to wall walnut and leather, drinks cabinet, the works.
