Experiences With Scraping M Bumper?

Post by Jumbo401 » Fri May 24, 2024 12:37 pm

Thinking about getting an M Bumper for my Z4C

How common is it for you to scrape the underside as it seems to hang quite a bit lower than the standard lci bumper?

Does it ever scrape going over speed bumps?

Cheers guys

At stock ride height, mine has never scraped over any speed bumps.

FWIW, nothing like my stock 981S with which you had to crawl over everything.

It is possible to scrap the fangs on a driveway entrance ramp or similar, but rarely a problem. I would rather do without the fangs to be honest!

Good to know

The fangs can always be solved with those rpi scrape guards.

That M bumper is a thing of beauty. Cheers abar121

I'm running OEM ride height on the rear of my Z4M, and about 10mm lower than standard at the front.

I cannot drive over single-hump speed bumps without dinging my exhaust, unless I specifically mount the bump with my front wheel.

Going up slopes e.g. on driveways can be tricky - the undertray tends to catch on anything more than about 15 degrees.

Also have to be very wary of parking in front of a kerb in a car park, as the fangs are inevitably slightly lower than the top of the kerb.

OP have you checked that bumpers are available? Last time I looked, they were NLA.

No problem, good luck!

The guards actually make them lower and the metal plate can cause more damage if it catches!

When I first got it to replace a 993C2, I rolled up to the usual single rubber speed humps and looked a the clearance. It's perfectly fine stock, but just a few mm lower and you'd have to do the crawl of shame over them. I did the same on a couple of car park entrance ramps.

Stock height, my zed hasn't touched down on any speed bump or ramp in over a dozen years of ownership, in London. It's really practical to be honest. That'll jinx it now...

My M is about 15mm lower at the front and I've never scraped it on speed bumps, but am very careful if I park face in to a kerb after getting my E46 caught on one. :(

If you can find some there are metal fang protectors you can fit.

FWIW I think you might need an M undertray to match up with an OE M front bumper.

Please keep us posted if you're still able to get the M bumper. I've heard the same about it being NLA :x

Nice one will be looking to get these once my bumper arrives : )

Do the skid plates protrude at all from the fang? As to stop front end damage?

No they literally sit flat to the fang, so would protect from damage from underneath such as speed bumps etc but not front on

How do the fang protectors bolt on? Looks like they use two existing holes where the side undertrays mount to the bumper, and two extra holes to be drilled into the undertrays?

I think it's an inevitable thing. I have Eibach pro lowering springs and just take care when nosing up to curbs. I think putting a plate on just makes it easier to make contact with the ground.

I can get over speed bumps by putting one wheel on the bump and have few groundings.

I put the Eibachs on because I was fed up replacing standard cracked springs on my M just like my previous Z3.

Mine hardly ever scraped until I put a B12 kit on (and slightly lower profile tyres), now the under bumper area looks like a scene from the chainsaw massacre but I recon it breaks down Laminar flow and rewards me with LOADS more power. Happy scraping.
