Here is a nice write up I copied from the German forum and translated for you into English.

anyone know if you can keep the valve open and have a better noise at lower speeds ?
Yes. Remove the s-shaped rubber hose between the actuator and its vacuum line and then cap both ends with carburetor/vacuum caps. Parts at Amazon, about $10 USD. Takes 2 minutes on your back to do. Can't imagine how one could screw this up. No codes. Sounds great.

Some pictures here...http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409139&highlight=exhaust

(Golf tees will work but this is much better: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CMFPJ2/ref=oss_product).

hi Rubber Ducky,

It makes a noticeable difference in the sound at idle and low RPMs. Huge? Noticeable. The caps may be difficult to find as a kit, but a hot rod shop etc. might have them. Golf tees have also been used by some folks or anything else to make the line air-tight. It's just a small vacuum line you're capping (and at the actuator to keep out dirt).

Hey all.. Decided to get around to trying this mod today.. I might be being stupid.. But I can't find the valve on my car, I looked down the pipe with a torch.. Can't see anything and i can see all the way around the curve of the pipe..
Tried looking under the car for the actuator, and can't find that either.....

????

I have a 2010. 2.3i sdrive car with msport package..

Help, I dead and more pics would be appreciated..

Thanks

Stop looking!

You won't find it cos you don't have it.

35i and 35is only.

Shame really as I know the 23i is a bit on the quiet side.

Ahhhhhh....

Thanks So much...
I can rest easy now....
Yep, way too quiet.. So next plan is a sports exhaust...

Been looking at the Longlife stainless systems.. But looking for recommendations.. And weather to get the race spec , or mild sport...

I did this, blocked the pipe... I reversed it because it makes little difference during normal driving, it really only makes a difference at idle/low revs and TBH, makes the exhaust sound like its blowing (broken) IMHO.

I stayed over at a hotel recently just after I did the mod, started the car up the next morning and woke the baby in a nearby house!

Best option is just to use the throttle more! lol

I am convinced once my car does it's initial 10 second warm up that it stays open all the time?

Is it an open/shut thing, or does it vary all the time?

Only I've kept an eye on the steam from my exhaust when its cold and I'm sat in traffic and the right pipe smokes just as much as the left?

David

It's vacuum controlled, so full whack it opens up and little throttle it shuts to stop any drone.

I've not heard any clunk or whatever when mine idles at cold startup but then I am inside it lol

I think it's off/on as I can hear the difference when giving it the beans, from a boom to a roar.

You should see steam from both whether closed or open as theres a small bypass on the silencer with the valve.
