Potential Coupe trouble spot

Anyone else noticed any rust when the hatch is open on the raised hatch?Opened the hatch to my Coupe at lunchtime and noticed two dark lines on both sides of the raised hatch. Rubbed one side with my finger and guess what? Flakey something and a rusty colour! Otherside has a similar line that I think looks like it would follow the rubber seal or overhang the seal (to the outside). Will have a closer look later, might be dirt but looks like some surface rust appearing.

Wash my car quite regulary including around the opened hatch.

What's the corrosion warranty on these? 6 years? Thought the boot might have been aluminium like the bonnet

not noticed either, oldest coupe must only be just 4 years old - was it 2006 they were launched

Do you mean on the underside of the boot lid? Do you have a picture of it so I can see where I should be looking, certainly haven't noticed anything before

Bonnet is alu? whoopy.

Boot does seem to collect dirt on the edges of the body work, the panel gaps are quite large. Not noticed rust yet though. :o

Do you mean here:

or maybe here:

Or somewhere else (sorry about photo quality)

Yep, your first pic. Not only where the rubber would sit but on one side mine is looking dodgy on the smooth flat(ish) surface also. Yours looks perfect and cleaner than mine too :).
Have a cam and will upload a few pics later this evening

Here's some dirty pictures - Croupade keep your hands away from your pants :P
Didn't look this bad to begin with but rubbed at it with my finger
Shall pay visit to local dealer

I wonder if the big window seal on the coupe is causing this, as I've noticed many times the amount of water that collects on that rubber.

Fortunately mine's a daily driver, so the water doesn't sit there long if it rains overnight, and I can't see anything like that on mine.

I remember reading somewhere that the anti-corrosion warranty was extended to 12 years for any cars manufactured after the 1st January 2004.

:o

Think a new tailgate is in order. I have read of 1 series owners having their tailgate's replaced due to corrosion where the wiper mechanism hole is

Don't mean to be negative but has your car ever been rear ended and repaired mine is not like that.

Wow that looks really bad. Darren's is a daily driver too.

Yep, daily driven and over the course of the last 2 years has done enough miles per day to rid it of any water, at least 25miles from ignition on to off twice a day. Not always used much at weekends though.
I think the problem is that there is no drainage as far as I can see although I have not yet looked that closely so any water that penetrates past the seal is gonna stay there. I'm wondering if this is water penetration from above causing rust from inside, rather than forming underneath. Paint was intact, it's just bubbling up
One thing I did notice when I bought the car was that there are two kind of bumps (not shown in the pic) that looked designed to be there but my previous Si never had them. Probably irrelevant, there's one on each side of the key mechanism prbably about half way along on each side and on the same edge I think where the lock catch is fitted.

Car was bought AUC and I've had it since 6800 miles, nearly two years now (car is Dec 2006 registered). Mine is probably one of the highest milage cars on the forum (53k miles now).
No signs of any accident repair and I think if it had been rear shunted the hatch would be a throwaway part if it got damaged, just like a front fender would be, you can't repair that and if it was damaged previously it would be the outside not underneath.
Methinks this could be a common problem in the future.

Just checked and mines not like that. Daily driver, 43k...

The lip where the glass meets the hatch does cause water to sit which is a bit of a flaw to the swoopy looks, but I doubt that would be the sole reason...mine has seen plenty of rain too. Perhaps just unlucky, I'm sure BMW will sort that under the corrosion warranty though?

Ouch that doesn't look good!

Take loads of photos and don't touch it any further, the warranty is likely to state (other warranties normally do) that the corrososion has to start under the paint (which is true in your case, not diputing that). It's meant for people ignorning stone chips and those starting rust, and in the location they would have trouble finding a stone chip so I don't think it's a problem - but try to keep as much under the paint as possible and don't expose it!

Also if you have a trusted independent bodyshop you know and trust it might be worth getting them to have a look and act as a 2nd opinion if needed
