What rear springs?

My rear springs are broken so I need to replace them.

I have a 2004 3.0SE and everywhere I look says "M Sport suspension". Is that different to normal suspension? When I look on eurocarparts it seems to make no differentiation between 2004 3.0 models of Z4, it just lists a single spring type.

Don't know if it helps all Prefacelift 3.0 Z4's came with M Suspension as standard fitment no other option was available.
They are 15mm lower than standard springs which were fitted to the 2.5 and 2.2 of the period.

Might want to consider aftermarket such as Eibachs (all four). OEM spring breakage is a known problem and persists even with the factory replacements. Since you have the M Sport suspension already, there wil only be a minor drop in ride height and a small improvement in ride quality (comfort) and handling. Search the forum and you'll find many threads. Good Luck!

Yeah, I was considering that but I might be changing the car next year so I wanted to keep costs down.

If I did go that route does anyone know the current cheapest price for eibachs in the UK?

4 Eibachs should be cheaper than 2 BMW springs - they were when I had the exact same situation as you, hence the tight-arse within me (actually, all of me given I'm a Scot) chose the Eibachs. The fronts are trickier to fit - harder to do yourself - whereas the rears could be done on a driveway.

BMW qouted me £85 per spring and that was not even fitted, I went the Eibach road. (but again I am also a tight arse scot)

Just ordered the set of eibachs... just hoping my local garage will fit them with 2h labour (the other garage wanted 2h for 2 springs!)...

Is it necessary to replace all 4 springs if the fronts are ok when using Eibach,s ?

I thought that, but then I thought for the sake of a tiny bit more labour, if a job's worth doing etc...

.... although the bill will be a bit higher than I thought as it'll need re-tracking, but then it would whatever springs I changed to. Next question is where do I get the tracking done, and will the settings be different with the eibachs on, and in which case will their system know about it?!

Say you replaced just the rears - you'd then end up with the front 15mm higher than the rear (the Eibachs lower a sport-equipped Z4 a further 15mm).

And for alignment, lower springs tend to result in slightly more negative camber (top of tyre leaning in) but there's enough adjustability in the suspension to reinstate factory settings. I run a bit more negative camber than factory but it's fine - figures are on a thread I started on here somewhere...

And BTW Jim you'd need alignment checked whether you went just BMW rears or all 4 Eibachs, so not really any extra cost if you look at it that way!

sp3ctre, yeh a agree with that but just wondered if leaving OEM,s on the front with new Eibach,s on the back, if anyone decided to do that, would that compromise the handling in any way, just a thought.

I'm no expert, other than "it doesn't sound right"...

BTW, I presume the standard thing to do is get the springs fitted, leave it a while for them to settle and then take it for alignment?

Cheers guys, if, or when more likely i get a bust spring ill go for a set of Eibachs, sounds like the most practical and cost affective way of doing this.
