Hi everyone!
I'm taking a day trip for work to Saint Davids from Oxford next week and I was looking at the route today and realised the A40 goes almost all the way there. I've driven Oxford to Monmouth a few times but does any body know the stretch of A40 from Monmouth to Haverfordwest? And how long do you think it would take and is it worth the detour?
Bit of a long shot but any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers

It looks great in theory and would be far better scenery than the M4.
I'm not sure how much longer it will take you but if youve got the time and the Company are picking up the fuel tab, I wouldnt blame you for trying it.
Hopefully some of the Welsh guys will be able to help you, but please report back if you do try it

It's a beautiful drive it really is. Especially alongside the Brecon Beacons. Some great views of the Beacons all along your left for a good 40 miles or so. So, yes it is worth the detour if you're not in a rush.
It is a long drive though! I reckon you could be looking at 3 hours if you get a tractor or two - this is very likely! Maybe you could take 30 or 45 mins off that on a totally clear run. You could add a bit if you get unlucky.
If you give if a go please report back!

Brilliant thanks guys. 3 hours was what I was hoping it might take and add that to the 2 hours it will take me to go from Oxford to Monmouth I might go for it as it sounds such a lovely drive. Also I don't have to be there till 2.30.
I'll let you know how I get on and my average speed later next week!

I did it and it didn't disappoint. Stunning scenery and fantastic roads. It was pretty slow from Abergavenny to Brecon with some idiot drivers going far too slow but after Brecon it was pretty clear. I managed to get from Monmouth to Haverfordwest in 2 hours 15 minutes so I didn't hang around once the road cleared. The whole trip from Oxford to Saint Davids took 4 and a half hours.Fugitive wrote:It's a beautiful drive it really is. Especially alongside the Brecon Beacons.
