Updated ///M residual info
As there were a number of threads on the other forums with regard to this, I got some updated info this week as to the BMW perspective on ///M depreciation and residuals.
Certain people (not many here though) had bought on a PCP using BMW Select and there was a possibility that the balloon payment they had to pay might actually be higher than the car's value, therefore they could hand it back and then instantly re-buy it for less money, or negotiate a deal at the least.
For a 6 month old car the 30 month residual (ie. in 2 years time) was £19,850 and the 36 month one was £18,250.
I think that unfortunately this will have put paid to my ///M ambitions, the type of car I have been looking at will cost around £900 a month for all running costs but before fuel, which is just too much

It's going for £34k, for a silver grey car that's fully loaded with nav, bluetooth, etc etc. So that's over £15k in 2.5 years just on depreciation, then add in tracker, tracker subscription, servicing, insurance, tyres, road tax (£300 then £400) plus the cost of financing (a reasonable portion) of the cost.Andy wrote:is that from new ?
i paid £31k for my 2k mile, 6 month old roadster and i expect to lose maybe just over £12k in 2.5yrs, which i can cope with.... just
900 pm must be 47k - 19k... ?
What spec is your car? When it's 3 years old, I would realistically expect a bid of £18k, less if it's Imola, less if it doesn't have professional nav. If you try and sell it privately, you'll need to renew the warranty at £1800, which means you'll probably end up trading it instead.
I don't mean to be a doom monger, or piss anyone off that already has an ///M. I would dearly love one, but whilst I could have one on my drive tomorrow without bankrupting myself, there is a difference between owning one and affording one.
It's a sad state of affairs indeed

I reckon those residual values are crap, TBH.
You only have to look at the Z3 M Coupe residuals to see that they're bound to be higher than that, mostly because the Z4MC is a better car and just as rare.
I'm hoping for £25k after 3 years, which I don't think is unrealistic. I mean, I've seen 2001 Z3MCs up for £21.5k recently!
But if you're negotiating at a dealer for a new one, haggle for a substantial discount.

Hi Paul - my efforts to sell it last time were a bit half-baked, but this time I have put it on Autotrader for a couple of weeks, with Pistonheads as a bit of a back-up.pvr wrote:I did notice your car was up for sale again Mike. What are your plans instead?
I have something lined up but I don't want to say until the deal is in the bag, just in case -

I paid £31K for a 1500 mile 8 month old M roadster that had a 'new' price with options of £47K. I know it will cost more to run than my previous 2.5 and that an extended warranty will be expensive.
But....what a car for the money Also, if I keep it for 5 years as planned there are some good private BMW specialists out there who have had plenty of experience keeping M3s on the road. In the end you only live once and it is such an incredible car for the money!

On the day of purchase, I write the cost of by 100% straight away.
That way, when I change - I only look at the difference I need to pay, and that is how much the new car will cost.

That's the best way of doing it, unfortanately I am financing a fair proportion of the car so it's not an option for me, my payments need to keep up with the depreciation so I can get my money back out of it.pvr wrote:On the day of purchase, I write the cost of by 100% straight away.

The residuals, at present are horrifying. I have got mine over 4 years and even with the hefty discount I got on the purchase price it does bring a tear to my eyeGiles wrote:I paid £49500 for my Coupe, it's probably only worth £35k tops now. That's some serious depreciation after only 9 months. And I can't remember whether I have a garanteed residual or not
What doesn't help is the release of the new M3 and problems with the Z4M which means this is going to be yet another expensive year for me in terms of cars!
Is yours on a BMW Select agreement?

I can't believe there's a June 06 M coupe for sale on BMWAW for £29,850
Not the best spec, but that is some car for that price. Very Scary depreciation.
There's a virtually identicial one to mine on, March 07, Silver Grey, red leather, only differences is mine has cruise, sun prot glass and foldiing mirrors, while this has cd changer and hifi loudspeaker (ignoring the same options) and its up for £35,995.
4 months old and its lost over £8k. And I bet you can get a decent wad off it too.
Oh well, smile and enjoy...
