Opinions?

Post by chrisba » Fri Apr 27, 2012 8:54 pm

Thinking about doing my wheels like this using Plasti-Dip and the Glossifier.

What do people think?

Anybody used Plasti-Dip before?

Nice car and wheels, the ellipsoids. Are they 107s? What is Plasti-Dip??

I wonder how a plastic would cope with hot brake dust, the weather, stones etc? Guessing they'd need to make the metal surface perfect before dipping. Do you know how the price compares with a full bar metal refurb? (£80 ish per wheel from Lepsons)

Thanks.

Yep, they are 107's.

Plasti-Dip is an aerosol spray (similar to a paint) that lays down a rubber like product in the colour of your choice. It can be peeled off if needs be but is incredibly resistant to stonechips/heat etc.

Just google "Plasti Dip wheels". There is loads of info available.

From the limited research i've done it seems to be have been done on wheels many times and is holding out pretty well in most cases (000's of miles).

Preperation and correct application looks to be the key although it can be layed down perfectly with very little preperation compared to a respray/refurb.

Cost wise, each 750ml can is £10 and you'd need approx 4 cans and then add the glossifier (if needed) at £16 a can (2 needed depending on the gloss you want).

So a total cost for all 4 wheels of £76.

Plasti dip is great, I'm going to do my gixxer with it, so its a stealth matt black. (gloss black normally)

Its often out of stock so buy more than needed as it'd be a bugger if you ran out on the 3rd wheel! Black is just back in stock.

Beauty is you dont even need to remove or mask the tyres, just peel it off the tyre when done. I think it would work well, but you'd need to make sure you get the wheels very clean first to get a good finish. Kinds thinking about this on my elliposids, but the car is black so may be too much black.
