Completly knackered 18 wheel home refurb NEW painted pics p3

Post by Sim_Simma » Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:29 pm

These wheels came up just a few miles away from me on ebay. 150 quid with 4 nearly new tyres. The wheels are straight with no bends or cracks but they are corroded to hell. I'm no stranger to paintwork but wheels are the kind of thing that take the most time but these one really will test my patience.

they don't look too bad in the first pics but thats before I got the pressure washer out and jetted off most of the bubbled paint. Off to start on them now, will report later with some more pics.
ps. The benefits of having a tyre machine in my uncles garage:

Powdercoat? Thats cheating! Haha

Upon descovering that the shoelace was broken on my work boot I decided to nip to wickes for some new ones but ended up buying thisImageImage
it's an electric random orbit sander. I have an air powered one but my 100l compressor can't keep up with it. It's mega loud coupled with the air compressor running constantly I thought f*** it I'm having one. So after a false start I'm off to play with it. Got to go to the gfs mums for sunday tea (refuse to case it dinner at tea time) so best crack on!

I would pay a shot blast and Powder coat with that level of corrosion. To much work for home refurb imo
At the price you bought them for, with tyres and they are not buckled, still not bad deal

I know most people would! But seen as I can do it for free then thats what I'm going to do lol. The sander I just bought is mainly for other applications and have been thinking about buying it for a while so by no means would I include that in the cost of this refurb. I have a mini air powered da with a 2 inch pad that I've used for most of it. That cost 25 quid a while ago lol. I probably got one wheel ready for primer in an hour so not too bad really. That includes the inside aswell. Also powder coating offers an inferior finish to using a gun an 2k paint as well.

Sounds like you have some decent kit to tackle. There is the satisfaction of doing it your self also
Looking forward to seeing the results.

They are some sort of 5 series replica, but unfortunately they aren't suited to the zeds as they have a ridiculous offset. Et18 an et 20 :/ they should fit the rear bang on but they stick out about an inch past the front wings!

definitely. If I wasn't lazy I could do them in a day but 1. It's the weekend and fancied a lie in 2. I've been doin other bits and bobs lol

what I didn't mention in the op is that they appear to be 2 brands of replica wheel and have deteriorated in different ways. The ones I have pictured have really bad corrosion wheras the other 2 just have flaking top layer paint. With a good intact primer coat and no corrosion. So the really hard work will only be required on 2 wheels. The other 2 will be much easier.

that wheel is pretty much ready for primer now so one more to go tomorrow and hopefully I'll have some primed pics for you :)
