New 2006 Z4 Coupe 3.0Si owner
Hi there
I am now the proud owner of a 2006 Z4 3.0Si Coupe, montego blue with black leather and silver dash. Has a high mileage (90k), but full history. Been waiting for this day for a long time and I am not disappointed, looks to die for and blistering pace.
Could I ask you experienced bunch if there are any common faults I should be looking out for? Have noticed a glovebox hinge is broken, but otherwise all seems good. Is there anything I should be paying close attention to on the running gear? The gearbox is a bit notchy, is this normal?
Cheers
Mark.

WELCOME!
At 90k miles I would be swapping out the gearbox oil for sure... viewtopic.php?f=2&t=101701
Some of the bushes on the chassis and suspension could be getting tired as well, along with shocks. Springs break quite frequently on the rear so keep an eye on those. Most would be picked up on MOT.
Other than that, only the water pump would be a concern if its never been changed. £250 and a relatively simple DIY if you are handy with spanners.

Welcome aboard.
As well as swapping out the gearbox oil mentioned above, you may also want to consider a CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) delete, which will smooth out the notchy gear changes - particularly 1st and 2nd

Welcome. Remember to keep the whippy aerial on to prevent issues with the cooling system.

Hi and welcome to the even more exclusive Montego Blue Coupe club. (Mine is now approaching 85K, so very similar to yours).
I had a service in June at 82.5K miles and had the gearbox oil changed, then bought a ZHP gear-knob - the gear-change has been transformed since then!
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed on the water pump..................

Welcome... excellent choice of car, the Montego Blue club is growing!
Mine just turned 91k miles old and is fine, CDV delete is a must but do some research and decide yourself... I took mine out at the weekend and it's honestly a far nicer driving experience!
I plan on changing gearbox/diff oils as soon as i can and will report back on any improvement... but yes the gearboxes are notorious for being 'notchy' mostly!
My glove box had also suffered a broken hinge, fixed it myself with a bit of glue so you may be able to do the same... the lid locates into a frame that can be removed from the dash, it's relatively easy to do but very satisfying one it fits properly again!

Agree on the CDV delete - if it has one get it removed!
My Z4 didn't have one when I got it, but I had it taken out of my E46 daily yesterday and it drives so much better without it!
Gloveboxes do seem a bit fragile - my first Z4C had previously had a new one, and my current one doesn't close too easily!
I went looking for Montego Blue as I like a colour (my E46 is Imola Red) and once you take out the blacks, silvers and greys you're only really left with Montego, or the really rare HellRot and Phoenix Yellow!
BTW OP, don't forget the photos!

Some pictures of my car.
Still absolutely loving it!! Love the top end howl.
Getting used to the gear change, but going to look into CDV delete. Is it much of a job (DIY or garage?)? Is the oil in the gearbox difficult to change?

Thanks for the photos.
They do get exciting when you chase the redline!
I had my CDV removed when my car got serviced, but AFAIK you just remove the hose from the CDV, take the CDV out then screw the hose in where the CDV used to be (but I suppose you may need to bleed it). There is a "How To" on here:- viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1227
Also had my gearbox oil done as part of a service, but I believe there is a drain plug and a level plug so it shouldn't be too difficult so long as you can get under the car. "How To" is here:- viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9115
Depending on where you are there may be a member who can help you out though!

Fitted a ZHP gear Knob today and a stubby aerial (will keep an eye on the temperature guage NickDE ).
Going to change gearbox and diff. oil when it is a bit warmer/drier! Will look at removing the CDV then too?
Having a bit of trouble sourcing the correct coil packs (currently Bosch 0 221 504 467), anyone know which bosch coil packs superceded them or what others will fit?

IME a ZHP is a big improvement over the standard knob.AveZ4coop wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2018 4:44 pmFitted a ZHP gear Knob today and a stubby aerial (will keep an eye on the temperature guage NickDE ).

My first E86 had a whippy, but when the water pump died the temperature gauge got from "normal" to "boiling" in about a mile - still at least Z4s have a temperature gauge! E90 and E91 3 series with the N52 engine don't (but E92 and E93 models do).
I had the gearbox oil changed on my current E86 when I had it serviced this year, but my BMW Indy didn't seem keen on doing the diff. because it doesn't have a drain plug!
Sorry I can't help you regarding coil packs - I hope I never need to find out!
