I think I prefer the top disappearing completely when down, I always thought my Elise looked a bit awkward with the rear window buttresses still in place & the top off

I agree with you about the Elise ... I kept my top on full time. I sold it after 6 months because I couldn't get in and out of it! Nice to drive but only on billiard table roads! Still, I p/exed it for the Z4 which my back much prefers! I suppose it did me a favour really!

Saw one of these a few days ago, parked up. Looked absolutely dreadful. The roof part OS far too high for the rest of the car.
It actually looks like a cut and shut.

It's a very strange thing the new MX-5. I've mentioned this somewhere else on here, but you are dead right - in the flesh they just don't look right. I can only comment on the rag top version as I haven't seen the RF yet, but its just looks wrong somehow

They also look tiny when you get up to them , ive had a early MX5 many many years ago , ok it was fun , for a while a short while
I wouldn't want to upset the many MX5ers who arrive at the Z4 but they do so for good reasons same as i did , they are just Ok if you can't be arsed to search for something better ( German )
They can do what they want with it now , the damage is done & can't ever see them being a roadster with anything about them

I came to the Z4 from a Mk3 MX5 with the folding hardtop. It was a good drive and reliable but the cabin was cramped and noisy and the luggage space was tiny also. Taking it on a two week holiday proved a challenge for the wife and I because the storage spaces in the cabin were inadequate to cope with all the usual stuff, phones, keys, wallets, sun cream etc. The boot wouldn't even accommodate a couple of reasonable sized hold-alls which resulted in us taking our clothes in black bin bags so as to be able to use every last square inch of space.
The new Mazda is even smaller (there's not even a glovebox in the cabin!) so for anything but a weekend blast around the lanes to end up at a nice pub for lunch, I'm sure it would quickly prove too restrictive as an everyday driver or to take on holiday.
There's really no comparison between the Mazda and the BMW. The Z4 is roomier, more comfortable, refined and in my opinion much more satisfying to own and drive - but then the Mazda is so much cheaper - you pay your money and take your choice!
