55mpg!

Post by Chris_D » Sun Jan 15, 2017 6:56 pm

Averaged an impressive 55mpg on a 44 mile round trip today!
We weren't in a rush to get to our destination of Valkenheide in the Amerongsebos today so I thought I'd drive like a nun and see what I could achieve.
Judicious use of the loud pedal, coasting when possible and programming 60mph into the cruise control and ok, it's flat in Holland admittedly and that's always a distinct advantage but still, that's not bad going for a 3 litre 6 banger is it!
I'm not allowed to hoon it when my good ladyfriend Laura is in the car so it's always a good opportunity to see how even more miserly I can be! Thanks Lau!
Sorry for the shaky naughty taken-on-the-fly pic.

no, not at all!
was using some of those 'hyper-miling tricks' plus very careful change up points and also missing gears altogether - 1st to 3rd to 5th etc.

There's that of course. But no chance of that when Lau's sat next to me - she can talk the hind legs off a donkey!

You must have been using the 'Mexican overdrive' quite heavily.
That's amazing. I guess in London most of the mpg goes to stopping and starting and never getting outta 3rd.
Mines stable at around 31.7. Mind you on the way back from Cornwall I stayed under or around 70 and still it read the same. :?

Do you reset the obc regularly to get a fresh average figure? If it's been left a long time the long term average can be slow to budge

The battery was disconnected while I fitted the door speakers so it reset a week or so before I left for Cornwall. But good point. I go to Oxford a couple of times a month so I'll reset it on one of those trips. Quite a leisurely drive up the M40.

yep, did a reset before starting out. I've seen 50mpg previously and thought I could improve on that.

Mine had a new battery a couple of weeks ago, so the averages in the OBC got reset.

A couple of hundred miles on the average speed is 38.8 mph and fuel consumption is showing 32.1 mpg - happy with that. :driving:

The mpg almost seems to get better the more the mph goes up - must drive faster. :(
