Coupe N52 oil leak

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, it looks like you are in fact fortunate enough to have a plastic valve cover!

I agree that it looks like someone has made a big mess while topping up some time, so doing as you have and degreasing it all is a good first step

Coupe N52 oil leak

Post by Steve84N » Mon May 01, 2017 10:02 am

Looking at my pictures do you think my oil leak is the valvetronic motor? It is wet higher up than the rocker cover gasket and you can see a dark patch under the motor but it seems to make a mess both in front and behind the motor which seems odd when wind flows backwards but it could be turbulence.

Do the coils just pull off or do you twist them? Does oil come gushing out when you take the motor off to change the gasket? Any other tips?

Thanks in advance.

Coupe N52 oil leak

Mines experiencing leaking ATM too (although I'm a M54  )
I was just wondering if someone can clarify that the Valve, Cam, Profile and Rocker Cover gaskets are all the same gasket? They're just called different due to preference?

I'd refer to them as Rocker Cover gaskets - Valve Cover or Cam Cover equally valid. Not sure why they'd call them Profile Gaskets. This may be a standard BMW translation from a German term?

+1 even on the forum that's what they're referred to as.

However many tutorials and videos for M54 engines (so typically material is orientated around the e46) refer to them as valve gaskets...

Kis, if you do the gasket on your M54 be very careful as the gasket tends to become extremely brittle. Pack the head so if it does fracture, it does fall into the valves etc.

Nice one. Not heard of packing before but that's a good shout.

I've heard before it can be quite brittle but didn't know I needed to take that much care...
