Update
I have taken all the hoses apart again and cannot find a leak.
I have cleaned the maf sensor.
Symptoms are the same. Erratic tick over and occasionally almost stalls.
I then disconnected the maf sensor. Started the car and it ran pretty much the same although I could persuade myself that it ran slightly better.
Reconnected the maf sensor. Ran the car and disconnected the sensor while car was ticking over. Absolutely no change in revs, or sound You wouldn't have known something had been disconnected.
So to my mind it points to the maf sensor.
Am I going mad?
The sensor is a Siemens and I have found an original new one for £177
Tempted to get it.

The si uses a different engine & air hoses to the earlier cars and doesn't seem to suffer from the same issueFox889 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2017 11:16 pm Dont panic Mr Mainwarring!!!
Exactly what happened to me when I bought my 3.0!
Did a complete service, oils, filters the lot, took her out for a long run EML came on.
'Lean bank' code came up. Cleared the code & she was fine on short trips [up to 20 miles] but any longer trips the EML tripped again.
Take the air filter housing off, there's a large pipe from the air cleaner to the EGR valve & off this large pipe is a little concertina pipe, bet you that has a crack in it & all you've done is disturbed the pipe while changing the filter.
Genuine BMW part B13.54.7.514.867 Rubber £22.25 + vat.

Fixed by cleaning the vanos solenoids. in hindsight I think the clue here was the erratic tick over and occasional stall. The error codes leading to lean bank1 and lean bank2 could have been as a result of the poor solenoids.
In the end it doesn't matter. It's fixed.

You may well find it gradually reappears, cleaning is good and worked for one of mine for a while, cropped up again and a new one solved it.
