Quiet tapping noise on start that disappears after 20 seconds
Is this normal and am I being paranoid?
The car has done 83k miles
Cheers

Z4M slighting tapping noise on start up
If it disappears I'd say it's normal - the S54 has a whole range of noises it makes, most of them initially worrying and none like any other car I've ever driven. It sounds like a bag of spanners cold an dteh engine is 'naturally' tappity, so as long as it's not noisy and persistent I'd say you're fine.
All that said, if you're approaching an inspection 1 or 2 it could just be the valve clearances need checked and adjusted. The noise mine made after its Insp 2 was much quieter than before the valves were adjusted. But still tappity

Phew that's a relief - thank you
It's just had its inspection 1 completed by a BMW specialist as part of they sale when I bought it
It's probably because I'm not used to a big engine in a smallish soft top that it all seems very loud (in a good way) certainly compared to the hybrid I drive every day

the solid valve gear which is race derived setup is noisey, no other way to describe it..... but learn to tune in to the range of noises it makes, for one day you may well hear something that isn't the norm....
other than that i love all the mechanical noises this motor makes.
