That kit lens isn't half bad and is 'almost free' in the respect that the body alone is almost = to the body + kit lens. I would also suggest getting a 50mm f/1.8 lens. These go around US$100-150. The advantage of this lens is that it is cheap and second it is VERY GOOD in low light (for the price!!) Then I would not buy any other lens. Shoot for 2-3 months and depending on what you shoot you may want to add a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens - these go for about US$500.
