The incoming car will have a tow bar, and I am planning to get a bike rack for that.
What are the recommendations for say a 3 bike rack?

Bike rack for tow bar
I have a Thule 2 bike rack that mounts on the towball.
Works really well, no worries with using it, although I do think its vulnerable to theft.

I do like Thule, I have the roof box of them as well which I like. Is there no lock on the tow ball for it then?

I have seen this type of rack quite a lot, I think it fits on the tow bar, looks quite sturdy

Bike rack for tow bar
I got one of these:
https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbveh ... C4ure5CWYj
Very happy with it. The carrier locks onto the tow bar and the bikes lock onto the carrier. Easy to get on and off and the assembly slides away from the car to allow access to the tail gate. Worked fine for me on our recent rip to the Northumberland. Very sturdy - doesn't move at all, even at high speed and/or over bumps. (It was for the Discovery, not the Zed!)

I too hve a dual bike Thule and yes you an get a "lock" for it. Frankly if you were minded you could bash it off in no time. Only had one mishap with the Thule and that was when one of the assembly bolts snapped leaving the bikes wobbling about somwwhat dangerously.
Sold a pair of soft top side covers and now retired.

Have gone with this one - but then the 4 bike version. After a bit of research it did seem to tick the boxes that I was looking for. Thanks for the recommendationRickRob wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2017 10:25 am I got one of these:

The Halfords one I have bolts to the towball, and is easy to load & unload and holds four adult bikes easily and securely. You just need to be aware that it sticks out the back a bit.
If you try and take a cat apart the first thing you have is a non working cat.
