Its the oil restrictor in the vanos

2 seals and a gauze filter.

The seals on mine were flat and squashed but not leaking, the gauze filter was filthy.

Took 5mins to change, and really no excuse for not doing it!

Nice work, Steve!

I was wondering if you or anybody else knew what the plastic ring next to the smaller o-ring on the VANOS pressure regulator valve is for? It just seems to be some kind of spacer?

Can't find one on TIS, but you know when its right, its bottoms out in the vanos block, you can feel it!

Yeah I'd figured that but just wanted to make sure ;)
Mine seemed fine so I just left it.

That's correct - the sealing is done by the outer O-ring so it only needs to be tightened enough to hold in place, hence why a torque specs isn't provided. Same with the oil constant pressure valve on the side of the engine block.

I thought I found a value for the CPV on the side of the block.........let me check

Pressure holding valve to crank case (1bar) 20NM

Oh wow I feel silly now! That does indeed seem like the correct spec and I've just found it too - when I looked in the past though I only checked under the oil supply category, not engine block! In my defence though, all of the online DIYs I read didn't specify a torque and used the logic I explained above ;)
