IPA

Post by Amg01 » Sat Jun 13, 2020 4:44 pm

Planning on polishing my car and been reading about IPA, do I IPA before polishing? If I am doing a 2 stage polish, do I IPA between each stage? Before putting wax on, again do I IPA after polishing? With some much advice out there its hard to know what is the right way to do it. Finally (I promise) what do people recommend as IPA?

You can get IPA from Amozon,it's not that dear. isopropanol .You need to dilute it to 20% strength.I would only use it to clean off the old wax/polish before you Clay it.

IPA stands for Isopropanol alcohol and it is used as a cleaner to wipe of residues from wax and polish. The alcohol dissolves the residues, the advice is not to use more than 30% strength. There are other sprays you can use on the market under the banner "panel wipe" which basically do the same thing.

Use 1 - to remove old wax/polish, wash car to get rid of the dirt then hit it with the IPA/panel wipe, you'll know the wax is gone if it stops beading.

Use 2 - to remove compound or polish - so once you start to correct the panel with a compound you need to wipe the residue off with the IPA/P Wipe so the panel is clean for the next stage. You do this after every stage, typically its a 2 stage (compound & polish) process so IPA after the compound the again after the polish so the wax or what every your going to put on to protect has good contact with the panel.

I’d also add that for diluting IPA distilled water is preferable.

I use medical grade rubbing alcohol which comes at 70% as I can get it from the local DIY shop for £3 for 500ml then dilute it 50/50 with distilled water. (it's out of stock now due to covid)

Rubbing alcohol is basically IPA and distilled water and works great for me.
