E89 '10 Recall Notice

Hello Fellow Zeders,

My new (to me at least) 10 plate E89 currently has an outstanding recall notice. I checked it late last night and a little bit of digging with the dealership has identitfied it as the positive batttery cable connector that needs replacing - full details here:

Summary

BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through September 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. In February 2013, BMW recalled 504,545 vehicles. In July 2013, BMW informed the agency that it was adding 1-Series, 3-Series, and Z4 vehicles, representing an additional 12,094 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 516,791. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.
Consequence

If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Seeing as it was issued some time ago I'd have thought most here would have come across it already but you never know. I dont know how I missed it as I did a full HPI check and MOT check on the car before buying it, must have glanced past it.

I ignored my recall, car been running fine 11 years, don't want some BMW tech messing it up.

But i wonder in future if cars will fail mot if recalls are shown not to be completed.

I wouldn't tempt fate, a very quick few googles reveals insurance claims can be invalidated if you ignore a recall notice and then claim based on that issue. This one is literally replacing a cable to the battery, if you're worried about a bmw tech messing things up surely a little research into your local dealerships will pick out the good versus the bad, and the forum even has a dedicated section to discuss them and the experiences members have had.

I'm not preaching, it's obviously your decision and your motor, but to me it seems an unecessary risk for such a small change which is being done free of charge.

I bought a 3 series with a long overdue recall., 5 yrs+

One phone call to dealer and booked in and fixed within 5 days so don’t envisage an issue

I had a 15 year old recall letter honoured in 1999 on my 1984 GPZ900R motorcycle. I had £1300 worth of new carbs fitted. Only paid £1500 for the bike.

I think the Zed recall is two items, battery cable is simple, but also some other cable elsewhere.

I've had a few recall jobs done on my E46, E90 and E91 without any issues.

And seeing as they've already done quite a few they should be pretty good at it by now so I'd just book it in and have a free coffee (or two) while you wait!

Years ago I had an 85 900R. Preferred my 600R that I had before it.
