My car is a 2007 3.0si, so approaching 12 years old. Only has 29,000 miles - Sunday Car - and hasn't showed any cooling problems. But like the OP, I'm beginning to wonder whether I should get it changed...?

Well I already posted about my E86.
But my daily 325i also has an N52 engine. That water pump died 6 months after I bought it.
Still it looks like it made it to 12 years and 135K miles as it's only ever been to main agents (15 visits in all) and neither of them had replaced a water pump! Maybe they last longer doing higher miles?

£227 for water pump, and two hours labour @£50ph at local Indy to fit. Seems like a no brainier for peace of mind. Never intend selling car, so booked it in.

I know~ old thread. Search engine will do that to you
My new to me E89 has a N52 motor with 61,000 miles on it.
How can I tell if the water pump is original or has been changed?

If you don't have a receipt to show it there is no way of knowing. I think what would also be interesting to see on this poll is what percentage of N52K (black top engines) owners have had water pumps fail. There was some rumour around that the pump was modified for the N52K but the details are very sketchy.

Well if it was modified, didn't help!
The pump on my 1st E86 died at 60K and 9 years - and that had a black-top engine.

This might be total nonsense, however I seem to recall someone mentioning that from the factory, the bolts holding the waterpump in place have some blue (glue?) stuff on them. Chances are with a replaced pump this hasn't been done again, especially by an indy..

Anything bolted to the engine block on the N52 has bolts with a blue blob on the heads to identify them as single use aluminium bolts.
But I believe the pump kit from Pierburg comes with new bolts, and as they made the OEM pumps the new bolts might have blue on them too!
If anyone has done a DIY pump replacement they should know for sure.

Another one to suffer, albeit at 142,000 miles (don't know if it was replaced earlier in its life by a previous owner but we have had the car for over 6 years).
Bought the Pierburg pump (11517586925, £249.59, comes with the one time use only bolts with it) and Mahle Behr TM1497 thermostat (£58.99 plastic unlike the original metal one) from bmwmotormec on ebay.
Had the car serviced (oil change, air filter, spark plugs replaced) at the same time as having the pump and thermostat replaced and total labour was £185.00 + vat from my local garage near Canterbury. So all in, price should be no more than £500 and I see plenty on here having it done for less. No issue identified with the thermostat, but replaced it as a preventative measure whilst the pump was out.

Around 120k and cost £1000 to fit at the dealer. Managed to limp it to the dealer which was only 5 miles away thankfully. it was on my list of things to do with my indy but was waiting for a cheaper insp1 to do at the same time. In the end i did an Insp2 followed 2x weeks later by the water pump. Lean times.

You paid a grand to get the water pump fitted? Please tell me that’s a mistake.Chickendippers wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 1:52 pm Around 120k and cost £1000 to fit at the dealer.
