Do you now need 20”+ wheels to get the best performance tyres?

Post by B21 » Sun Oct 31, 2021 3:38 pm

Following on from purchasing a set of OE 437M rims (19 inch 9J 10J) I was surprised to see that the new Continental Sports Contact 7 which I assume is a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S basher is not going to be available in the 265+ sizes in a 19” spec…

I see some of the Bridgestone Sport family are similarly restricted…

Looks like the exotic tyres are destined for 20”+..which I assume is Porsche territory?

275/30 19 seems quite a limiting size..another first world problem…

I can only assume it's based on demand and that most new cars that call for a tyre as wide as 265+ are the sort of cars that sell with fashionably large diameter wheels 20"+.

For example, a Boxster GTS comes with 265 rears and 235 fronts on 20" wheels, whereas you'll find 19" wheels on a Nissan Qashqai with 245 width tyres.

As I said, first world problems… :tumbleweed:

Given the G29 rolls on 18”/19” rubber and is a ‘modern high performance car’ obviously despite that they are not catering for that current production car..?

I struggled to find matching 20 inch tyres for my XFS to be honest. Ended up going for Goodyear F1 3's on the front and F1 5's on the rear, as strangely neither were available in both the sizes I needed.

18 inch tyres seem to be about the best option for choices from what I've seen. But then the XFS is the first time I've needed to buy 20's.

There is also quite a lot of car's that run 18 inch wheels that are commonly used on trackdays, so the higher end performance tyres are there for that larger market.

I think its the asymmetric set ups that struggle..

I'm hoping that Conti release further versions of the Sports 7..the launch took place with Supras that normalky come on 18" rims?

Michelin cover the 18" sizes well.

For example Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport

8 in 18" none for E89
9 in 19" only the fronts

Conti Sports Contact 6

2 in 18" none for E89
23 in 19" various options for E89

Maybe the hole is between track day tires and UHP road tyres?

Maybe I'm just having a bad day!

Hi SARS, yes the 19" P4S in 235/35 19 and 275/30 19 works..

Just desperate NOT to go with the masses..

I've still got about 4mm on the 18" Zito 935s in 235/40 18 and 265/35 18 Goodyear Assy 5, so thinking if I wear them down, by then,
Conti will have seen the error of their ways and released 235/35 19 and 275/30 19 in the Sports Contact 7 and tyre reviews have proclaimed the Sports the greatest tyre ever for 400 bhp rear wheel drive cars.. :driving:
