Removing the OE phone mount
I'm somewhat confused about your *footnote and the differences between these two rubber mats - on RealOEM it lists as one for vehicles with Storage compartment package S493A, and the other for vehicles without it - and with a slight difference in dimensions:AnubisZed wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 9:45 am Blank half tray with phone* - 51 16 9 181 229 (short number 9181229) - Rubber mat - 51 16 9 174 846 (short number 9174846)
Cup holder with phone or blank (RHD) - 51 16 9 181 223 (short number 9181223) - Rubber mats (cups) - 51 16 9 150 218 (Short 9150218) & 51 16 9 198 594 (short 9198594)

*If you decide to remove the phone base (either phone/blank or phone/cup holders) but don't want to replace the tray then you can remove it and place this rubber mat in it's place 51 16 9 150 224 (short 9150224).
- 51169174846 213,5 x 73,1 mm
- 51169150224 219,7 x 69,3 mm
Most posts only mention the 51169150224 part - both on this forum and on others. But if I could use 51169174846, I'd be pleased, as that's cheaper than 51169150224 - no way I'm paying 70$ for a piece of rubber!
In my case I have the two cup holders and legacy phone cradle. I'd like to keep the tray, retaining the cup holders and just pry out the phone mount and place the rubber mat in its place.
EDIT: Giving some thought above the previous post, could the answer be that 51169150224 is meant to go instead of the removed phone mount (and is tapered towards the front), whereas 51169174846 is the one one marked with the X above? I.e.it's the mat for those that have a half storage compartment instead of cup holders - and is rectangular in shape?
For another (possibly even cheaper) rubber mat option: could 51167118064 (designed for an E90) be used? (Those appear in much greater supply and at more reasonable prices, even on AliExpress.) I couldn't find its dimensions on RealOEM but visually, the difference is in that it has a higher "lip" on the edges as opposed to the more flat design of the E89 mat. Here's a video of someone removing the phone mount and replacing it with that mat on an E90: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEqWoIeQzKk If the phone mount is the same dimensions on the E89 as it is on E90, then perhaps this mat would also fit?

51169174846 is the piece of rubber to cover where the clip in phone was..
I've just removed the whole phone/cupholder and will replace it with the storage compartment and rubber
51169181229 and 51169174845
FWIW to get the existing phone holder out you need to take the whole central tunnel trim off..the release tangs can only be accessed from underneath..

We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

All clear now, thanks! This just shows how inaccurate and misleading the RealOEM diagram is, showing that both of these mats are item #10. (Even though the description does point in the right direction - apparently Storage compartment package S493A = cup holders)
I'll see if anyone can opine on the 51167118064 E90 mat but I might as well just order it and report back.

If you're not worried about grip, you could also line it with eg a piece of felt cut to shape. Or you might get some rubber mat and trim that to size. It's very hidden in the armrest, so I don't think it would show.
I will probably replace my own phone holder when I replace the console, but I won't discard it because restorers will soon be

My first mod was a "iphone/cupholder-delete" last fall..
"Genuine BMW Oddments Tray + Insert mat Z4 Roadster E89 51169174845 51169181218" for $41 USD new on ebay.
Money well spent. The cupholders were useless and my phone couldn't sit flat.
