I know photos in profiles have to have a fairly low pixel count, but I have no idea how to make them fit.

Any picture editing software, including the ones which are within the displayed pictures on your computer/ mac/ phone.
All you have to do is keep reducing the physical size of the picture until the pixel count/ file size is within limits. If I could do it, anyone can! I have removed my profile picture BTW!
