N54 oil specifications

Post by mcbutler » Wed Jan 31, 2024 1:37 pm

Hi All,

I am trying to find the 'official' required spec for N54 engine oil (35i).
I believe its 05-30 to BMW spec LL04.
Castrol titanium edge for example
is this correct?

N54 oil specifications

LL01FE was the latest spec defined as BMW as preferred for the N54.

Oils meeting the LL01, LL04 and LL12FE are deemed acceptable.

Most of the then recommended suppliers variants were typically 5W-30 or 5W-40..the LL01FE prefers 0W-30 although approved oils in that group included 5W-30 versions.

There is a general contradiction between BMWs original specs and the fact that life has moved on from an oil industry perspective with a drive (pun) to low friction oils hence the introduction of 0W oils and products like 0W-16 oils plus for turbo charged direct injection petrol engines the issue of low speed pre ignition which mandates SN+ or SP SAE defined oils.

Having said that ..if you are happy to change your oil annually / every 5k miles then any 5W-30 oil will do..maybe 5W-40 for summer use of re-mapped N54s.
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is
