Windscreen washers not working but headlight washer are ok

Post by R9MPO » Mon Feb 12, 2024 8:03 am

Hello all,

As the title really recently purchased a E85 from a member but the washers for the windscreen do not work.

The headlight washer work ok and will deploy every few pulls ( does this mean they're xenon?)

But when i pull the stalk there is no sound for the washer for the windscreen. I have been under the bonnet and disconnected and reconnected but no change.

I've checked fuse 38 but all is ok as expected seeing as the head light washers work? is there any other fuses i should check?

I've seen some posts of the bottle getting blocked but i would still expect to hear the washer motor going?

Any help at all would be most grateful :D

Have you tried swapping the connections, in case it’s a dead pump?

The pump no my previous Z4 died at the MOT station, so hopefully that's the problem.

Regardless of the type of headlights fitted the headlight washers don't operate every time you pull the stalk - I think it's one in five?

If you've got the wheel next to the light switch to lower the headlamp beams you've got Halogens as the Bi-Xenons are self-levelling.

Could be a clogged filter? The bottom of the washer bottle has a little filter before it goes into the pump.

If one works, then it seems unlikely but could also be a problem. Many models suffer from this. Have had to clear the e90 and r50 which run similar sort of set up. Thankfully the access on the e85 is easy. The other cars have the washer bottle within the front wing, so wheel off job.

£8 was a bargain.

I needed one for my MOT test and the only way to get one the same day was at Sytner for £49.91 in June 2019. :o
