Rocker Cover and Oil Filter Housing Gasket Replacement - 3.0si Black Top

Post by dgmx5 » Thu May 11, 2023 3:54 pm

I know there a few threads on here regarding this, but just wanting to pull together the hive mind's thoughts and check part numbers.

I plan to not replace the cover itself but to change the gaskets. That may prove to be a false economy of course, especially given the CCV is part of the N52K plastic rocker cover and cannot be readily replaced or cleaned separately.

So my thinking is as follows:

Rocker Cover Gasket (OEM 11127582245)
Is it
Elring 584.950 Gasket Set, cylinder head cover
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/208227
or
Elring 534.310 Gasket Set, cylinder head cover
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/988414 ?

They look quite different and I am unsure which is needed.

Rocker Cover Bolts
FEBI Bilstein 49851 Bolts (22 in set)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/febi-bilstein/9809500

Do you need any seals to go with these bolts?

Valvetronic Motor Gasket (OEM 11127552280)
Elring 572.300 Seal, camshaft adjustment
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/7638071

Eccentric Shaft Sensor Seal (OEM 11127559699)
Elring 523.000 Seal, crankcase breather
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/7636434

I might also change the oil filter housing gaskets at the same time as I will be doing an oil change.

Oil Filter Housing Gaskets (OEM 11428637821 and 11428637820)
Is it
Elring 504.530 Seal, oil filter housing - HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/7294465
or
Elring 632.090 Seal, oil filter housing - FPM (fluoride rubber)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/10065432 ?

and is it
Elring 306.750 Oil cooler gasket - HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/7938370
or
Elring 596.450 Oil cooler gasket - FPM (fluoride rubber)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/9970584 ?

I will get replacement aluminium bolts for the oil filter housing from BMW.

Thanks in advance.

If you've got the black engine cover, this is the correct gasket set for your valve cover:

Elring 584.950 Gasket Set, cylinder head cover
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/208227

The other set you've linked to is for the earlier silver cover N52 engine.

No sure re the bolts... I recently replaced my entire rocker cover with an Elring cover (which included all the gaskets and bolts needed). My thought process was that once I'd added up all the gaskets, bolts, etc that I'd need to buy, I figured I could spend a little more and get a whole new cover with the CCV sorted too.

In terms of the oil cooler gasket, either that you mention will fit - but the gasket with the additional tabs/grooves is a more recent design. I bought my oil cooler gasket straight from BMW and it came with the additional tabs/grooves, so I'd go with this one of the one's you've listed:

Elring 596.450 Oil cooler gasket - FPM (fluoride rubber)
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/elring/9970584

Might also be worth changing the oil filter housing gasket whilst you're in there (unless that's been done recently!)

Thanks for that.

If I go for the Elring rocker cover it will be over £135. Do Autodoc have a UK warehouse or will I be liable for custom duty on top?

Yep, that’s around about the price I paid for my rocker cover a couple of months back.

The prices on Autodoc include VAT, so no additional tax/customs charges. I’ve ordered a few things from them since getting my zed and no issues on my end.

But it will most probably be shipped from Germany, so usually takes a week or so for it to turn up.

I have bought from Autodoc before without custom duty being charged.

My concern is that for a consignment of more than £135 I will get stung.

Very much not my area, but I researched around a bit before buying from them for the first time as I had similar concerns as you. But I don’t remember finding anyone who said they’d been charged import fees on top of the price paid.

I’m not sure if this is something to do with the fact that Autodoc are collecting VAT at the point of sale even if it’s over £135 - and therefore paying that to the gov on their end.

I’ve also read in a few forums that car parts from the EU could be exempt (as long as they’re made in the EU). But have not seen the actual source of that.

All I can tell you with certainty is that all three of my orders from Autodoc to date have been over £135 (including the Elring valve cover) and I wasn’t charged any additional import/customers fees for my orders:

Anyway, hope that helps.

Really helpful j24. Wish I had asked that question sooner.

With the rocker cover, I know it comes with new bolts and the rocker cover gasket. Does it also include the valvetronic motor gasket and the eccentric shaft sensor gasket?

Yep - it comes with all the gaskets and bolts you need already installed.

Here’s what mine looked like when it arrived (not the most helpful pic but you can see the valvetronic motor gasket in situ):

And post install:

I say it came with all the bolts… it didn’t come with the two outer bolts in the centre (you can see in this pic):

Honestly not 100% sure why it didn’t come with these bolts too, but seems to be by design for whatever reason (not just the Elring cover, all N52K plastic covers, including the genuine BMW one).

Anyway it’s not a problem, the bolts already installed are steel instead of aluminium on cars with the plastic valve cover, so you can reuse those two bolts - That’s what I did anyway and no issues.

I mainly followed this video whilst doing the job. I found it pretty handy (bonus that he’s installing the same Elring valve cover in the video!)

Rocker Cover and Oil Filter Housing Gasket Replacement - 3.0si Black Top

Appreciate I'm a little late this post but I've found all the info above extremely useful as I'm about to undertake this job!

My only question is with the Valvetronic system. Does the ignition cycle trick (as suggested in the youtube video at the end) actually work? or is a diagnostics tool needed? If so, whats the most cost effective way to do this? I have also heard of another N52 valvetronic relearn trick, ignition ti position 1 and pumping the accelerator peddle 10 times.

Any advice would be really really helpful

Youtube video in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JrK6YoNV3o

Many thanks in advance!!

The ignition cycle trick worked for me - no extra diagnostic tools needed. You can hear it working itself if you turn the ignition on without starting the car... I did it 2/3 times to be safe (probably completely pointless!)

Good luck! :)

Rocker Cover and Oil Filter Housing Gasket Replacement - 3.0si Black Top

Post by wolfgangCoupe » Thu Feb 22, 2024 11:58 pm

All went well and the job is complete! It's a pretty simple job with the right tools, such as deep sockets.

Only hiccup was when putting everything back together, it was going excellently and then carelessness struck and I self sabotaged as I turned and dropped a bolt for the valvetronic in the engine bay, never to be seen again. Luckily I sacrificed the bolt on the under side of the vvt while I put everything back together and ordered another e8 bolt. (going to install this weekend)

Decent amount of oil in some of the coil pack chambers behind a few of the spark plugs but I think this is only due to the central gaskets on the rocker cover being knackered!
