Rip off Broadband

Post by ronk » Tue Feb 27, 2024 11:48 am

Ive just had my notification letter informing me that my price is increasing.

I can see why it goes up in line with inflation but it’s rising by CPI + 3.9%. I think it’s a rip off - but they have us In a corner.

Currently the best service they can supply me is 18mbps so they aren’t exactly supplying a top rate service!

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

This is a common part of the contract, it includes if you look things like your mobile contract too. CPI + a certain percentage usually up to 5%
Of course this is so that companies that have cost increases that are specific to their industry that are not accountable for in CPI can cover those costs to a degree. There has been a fair bit of news coverage of this bigger than normal increase coming this year, it got national coverage in main stream media about a month ago.

If you are unhappy with the broadband increase, change supplier. You will probably see in the Ts and Cs though that they have similar stipulations.

It seems they all have the CPi + clause in their contracts so there is little or nothing we can do.

Yeah, just had the same for the phone. £ 1.71 a month increase.
The CPi + was introduced to protect Joe public from being ripped off ??

It goes up each year. I'm with EE fibre and its just increased from 55 to 59 quid a month. You can always go with a different cheaper provider who will do a tempting sign up deal but it will just go up again. It's just a bit of a faff changing router etc with a new provider with everything relying on them now. Never have any problems with EE broadband though, don't think its ever gone down and had it since it used to be Orange.

My EE phone bill has gone up as well by another 3 quid a month

Only good thing for the moment is I jumped from my current fixed price energy tariff to another fixed tariff just before the OFGEM announcement last week which works out cheaper than the price cap so its offset other bill increases a little.

I know our council tax will be going up by 4.99% come April which equates to 6 quid extra a month and also expecting water rates to rise at the same time. My pants are well and truly down :|

At least my Local Government pension is due to rise by 6.7% in April, all spent now with all the other bill increases

Changing supplier is nearly always a good idea. Just switched from BT Broadband to Vodaphone. Same speed (70 MBs), just £21/month and no need to pay BT for line rental as we've moved to VOIP. Switchover was completely hassle free. Saving hundreds of pounds

One of my broadband lines is now a 4/5G box. Pay £13 a month, unlimited using the 4G/5G network so a lot better than the 18mps that you get. I have around 70-150 depending on the wind

I still use the broadband lines for backup though but pay annually so you get a better price.
