Project Spa - baton passed on. Keep reading
Starting this thread to record the progress I am making in prepping a car for Mark (Wayo11) to take to Spa in July, on a shoestring-ish budget, Top Gear style.
After a lot of faffing about I now have a very nice 2.5si sitting on my drive awaiting a bit of fettling.
It was dark and wet when it got here so tomorrow I will be plugging the software in and seeing what the various lights mean.
Already fixed the roof issue.
We think it may need calibrating or something to take into account the pair of brand new oem vanos solenoids. Hopefully that will put out the check engine light. Anyone got any input on this?
I am leaning towards the trifecta being the yaw sensor, but again, codes will tell.
That's it for now.
Hopefully photos and a better assessment will pop up in the morning.

Thanks for starting the thread Martin, can’t wait to see the progress in the coming weeks! A bit weird buying a car without even seeing it, but with the help of the forum my mind was put at rest.
We still need another 2 cars for the trip and I have got the ball rolling on convincing the others to go down the Z route. I quite fancy the idea of 3 Zs in convoy to Belgium and round the ring! Paddy’s project car is the next obvious choice if the stars align

This looks like being a great thread!
When the battery died in my car I started it with a jumper pack and got the dreaded trifecta. Ross at RBM got rid of it by resetting the steering angle sensor, but electrical issues on this era of BMW seem to be very random. I'm sure Martin will get to the bottom of it.
And three Zs for the Spa trip would be great to see, so good luck finding two more Mark.

Thanks for the added info. I will possibly do a recalibration regardless, can’t really do any harm.Mr Tidy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 9:53 pm This looks like being a great thread!

Well I got 5 minutes this morning before the rain came back. Got a few photos and some initial findings.
Roof works very well. One of the quietest and smoothest I've seen in fact. So let's get it moved into the boot while it's still a good'un.
Seats are in good condition and both warm up nicely. Just what you need for a road trip in July.
Decision has been made to revert to the silver trim and sell on the piano black as, though it looks great, for this project it makes more sense to use it to finance the fettling that is needed. So watch out for the Sale ad in a week or so.
Cup holders are staying.
As you can see, a nice selection of dash lights which need addressing.
Headlights need a little clean up, nothing too major.
Fog lights have condensation but work. Not an essential for this particular project.
Spare key appears dead. Got it on a toothbrush charger and will try pairing it again, just in case.
Top cover gasket has a leak at the lower rear edge. Will fit new gaskets but first need to confirm no other work is needed under there.
I checked the mirror switch and it moves both mirrors in all directions, so another common issue covered.
Now, if the weather would just become more laptop-friendly I could crack on!

History is a bit sparse on this car. Lots of receipts for work Janis had done but nothing prior to that.
I've amended the thread title to include the registration, in the hope someone may recognise it.

Sadly it seems the spare key is dead. Opens the car in the lock and starts it, so just not doing its remote thing.
Tried pairing it but no joy.
Been on the charger all day.
So either live with it or send it off to The Master Locksmith.
It'll depend on the cost of other fixes I suppose.
Noah tells me he's sending out another dove shortly and hoping for dry land tomorrow so we can crack on.
