Gearbox whine

Post by Alexanderfitu » Fri Mar 01, 2024 8:41 pm

Hi all!

Done most of the common jobs now (all gaskets, seals, vanos solenoids, disa valves etc).

Car is now driving well, but needs a set of diff and subframe bushes, however I have a whineing noise that I want to track down before spending any more money.

Its louder inside the car and can be felt at lower speeds. Above 30mph road noise drowns it out.

Placing a load on the drivetrain or coasting does not change it. Sounds like it's from the gearbox as its not related to road speed but related to engine rpm.

Noise is still there with aux belt removed.

Video below:

Any ideas much appreciated

If it was gearbox it would change with load and unload
Could be clutch release bearing or flywheel?
Does it go when you dip the clutch?

An input shaft bearing wouldn't usually change load/unload but a secondary gear shaft bearing would imo.

Funny enough the clutch release bearing is also noisy when my foot is on the clutch, but that bearing noise goes away when the clutch is fully disengaged.

This bearing noise is there all the time

Actually, if it was input shaft bearing it would be road speed linked not engine rev linked, when moving at least.

The noise is the same in 1st 2nd 3rd, so that rules that out,. As the gearbox input shaft is stationary when at a standstill but in 1st with clutch depressed, that means it must be coming from the engine!

Well, it must be coming from the oil pump. I'm not changing the oil pump or doing anything with the chains so sort of solved ;)
