This does work for UK cars, worked on my current E85 and previously E86. Did you put in the VIN correctly? Did you check the VINs match on the documentation and car chassis?
Most peculiar - I cross checked Car Chassis/V5/MOT Certificate and all are the same but the site says not recognised?!
You definitely not doing something like putting O instead of 0 or something?

Just make sure you are not putting in zeros instead of letter o and visa versa if there are any .
