Hello from Hampshire

Post by Z4_PPZ » Sat Mar 30, 2024 7:15 pm

Hi!

Long time browser first time poster. Reviewed lots of advice here in the past from others with similar issues I’m facing. I’m 1 year into ownership of an ‘04 2.5 E85. Loving the drive!

My power steering died this morning, from reading posts already here looks like the EPS. Was wondering if anyone new a garage in or near Southampton that they’d recommend for a fix. Would go to RBM (did my roof last October) but it’s a fair old trek without power steering!

Thanks in advance!

I picked up a 3.0 from Shoreham and drove it back to Norfolk without power steering.
Once over walking pace it isn't too bad really. Just a bit 'old school'.

Can you not whip out the motor yourself?
Not half as difficult as it looks and I'm always happy to talk you through it if needed.
Done several now, plus another three via Whatsapp. One of those in the States. :D

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I use RBM all the time, but I don't live far away. I found this list of BMW specialists on another website that might help if nobody has a recommendation:- https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/top ... 2&t=796191

I believe ECU Testing provide a mail order service and guarantee for rebuilt EPAS units.
Coupes because stunning!

enuff_zed, thanks for your advice! I guess where I’ve never driven a car without PAS I’m not experienced enough to be prepared to drive a long way like that. However your offer of support is very generous and I’d love to take you up on it, even just to validate whether it’s something I could turn my hand to it!

Mr Tidy, thanks for this list! Really handy, if I decided I’m not capable of removing the motor myself at least I have some local recommendations who may be able to help!

Cheers all!!

Z4_PPZ, if you PM me a contact number I can WhatsApp you some photos etc.
If you are fairly confident with hands on stuff it should be fine.

Zedebee, I am discussing heading down to Southampton to replace Z4_PPZ's steering motor with a good one I have here.
In the past when I have done this and fitted a different motor the Steering Angle Sensor has needed recalibrating.
On both occasions, after 15-20 miles it has needed doing again, then been fine. I think Street encountered the same issue too.
Given how far away I am, would you possibly be able to help out if the SAS needed recalibration after I'm gone?

If it’s the SAS recalibration in INPA, yes no problem. It’ll be a 45 minute drive up from Southampton.

You can get a quote for car transport and have it sent to Norfolk, then when fixed get the train. You can drive it without power steering but roundabouts can be a bit challenging!

He could, but I have two people wanting airbag modules fitted and coded down there at the same time, so worth my while doing the trip.
