EvoX-R 2.0 bixenon projector modification attempt

Post by x-driver » Tue Apr 16, 2024 12:14 am

Last year I installed EvoX-R 2.0 projectors in my Z4. After some time now I found out the sharp cut-off really bothers me.

It won't be that visible when driving on a straight road, but when driving on some up- and downhill sections it's horrible. You'll see that shape going up and down - when going down, there will be absolute darkness above the cut-off. Unpleasant.
It's also a bit hard to adjust the height right to not blind other drivers. You'll always blind someone every now and then and get warned about it with flashing.

So I did some research and found out a guy who made a hybrid with original E55 and EvoX-R (1.0 I think) projectors. He took the original Fresnel lens and their holder from E55 and installed them to EvoX-R cups. That way he got the wanted blurry cut-off.

I decided to do the same and got to work. The first problem was that I was unable to separate the lens holder from the cup as it seems to be welded or soldered to it. So I made some spacers for the EvoX-R lens holders to match the E55 holder lenght. This turned out to be the correct lenght to get the correct beam shape.

After assembling the first projector it was time to do some testing and comparison:

The hybrid turned out to be brighter than E55 (which is in a quite good condition however), but darker than stock EvoX-R 2.0.

The hybrid has significantly narrower beam than the other two. The widest is E55, but it's just way darker than stock EvoX-R.

That's where I stopped for now. I'm not sure if I want to sacrifice the precious width, but on the other hand I get rid of the sharp cut-off and darkness above it and other problems. I really don't know what to do.

I made some quick photos to see the beam shape, not the brightness:
