Transmission noise - Manual 20i

Post by Blurredman » Sun May 05, 2024 11:53 am

Howdy,

You know how sometimes you think something is wrong but you can't be sure you're not imagining it? Well anyway, I'm pretty sure something is up now :/

I have a 6-speed manual 20i and have noticed that when I am decelerating there is a whining noise coming from somewhere around the transmission tunnel (at least I think so). Seems to be less pronounced in the higher gears, and disappears as soon as I put even light pressure on the loud pedal. I'm thinking it might be a bearing and am hoping it's propshaft rather than gearbox. Car has done 50K miles.

Sound familiar to anyone?

(Photo 'cos, well why not :D )

More likely the diff ?
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

Noticed today that the noise disappears as soon as I dip the clutch. Not sure what that signifies, maybe clutch itself is the problem?

Is that pic before or after the ‘square’ set up?

And second vote for diff.

Not gonna lie, am hoping it's something simpler than the diff. Looks like a call to the RAC warranty man... Mind you, it's a lot less noticeable with the roof down!

No that's an old picture. Here's the (very dusty) car with the square setup, albeit the rear tyres are 235s with standart 225s on the front.

Transmission noise - Manual 20i

Can’t tell the difference from the side profile, it’s only from behind with the 235 that it’s obvious if you’re looking for it.

I’ve had my Mrs 326’s refurbished, so will be following suit shortly… how are you finding the ride comfort?

A simple diff oil change can make a significant difference, not suggesting the diff is damaged, it’s just easy to hear them in the E85/E89 as you sit very close to it

Oh, the ride comfort on the non runflats is a revelation. It's taken a few miles to bed the tyres in, and I still need to get the tracking checked as the front sometimes feels a little oversteery on a right hand turn, but the car feels pretty planted. I don't do any silly boyracer stuff so I won't be taking it to its limits. I can live with the compromise considering how much more expensive new 9" wheels are, and the continued risk of the beggars cracking. Just knocked up a comparison shot, before and after (including number plate!). You can definitely tell the width difference from the 255 to 235, but from the driving experience I can live with the aesthetics as the handling is not dramatically changed.
