Ah yes the famous B(L) REMBOs. :D

I had a Crapi once. Nothing wrong with the brakes, everything wrong with the suspension (or lack of). Mine had an amusing alternator fault, which would, on occasion, forget it was 12v and think it was 240v. Always happened in the dark, when obviously it blew every bulb on the car.

Them was the days! :)

I had an x brace on the rear axle, fatter ARBs, 175lb -1” front springs and a strut brace. One day I chased a Golf GTI down a back road. After lifting his inside rear wheel on three bends he finally binned it in a hedge. Ye olde 2.8i cruised on by. 😎

My first car was a mk 1 Capri 1600, terrible all them years ago and worth a fortune now…. I just don’t get it :?

Then a couple of my mates bought Mexico’s and I bought a Strada Abarth 130TC, it wasn’t even close.

I’ve never really understood the ‘Ford’ thing :|

Excuse me....
Fords have always been American.
VW were German. Then we were offered the company (for nothing) in 1945 as part of war reparations. The UK not being the most business-savvy Country ever, declined, and left it to Ze Germans. Good job they never made a success out of it!

Nice looking car, colour really suits it. Must admit with me, my favourite back in the day was the XR2i (or even better the Fiesta RS turbo  ). Sold tons of them when they were new, only one slight problem... Ford released them with 5 alloy wheels (a full size alloy spare), didn't take long for the toe rags to get a jack under the flimsy cage where the spare was fitted and off it went (less than 5 minutes), only needed to find 4 XR2i's parked up and you had a set of new alloys! Right back to VW

Well it would be interesting comparison between a MK1 XR2 and GTI. I wouldn't be surprised if the Fiesta was the better drive over the Golf at the time, thinking that performance VWs were still a new thing in the 80s where Ford were an old hand at it by then with a much more sporting heritage.

Here is one: https://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/pzggtu6jho2v

Conclusion: Verdict

Golf GTI 1.8 is the fastest by a huge margin.

In those days, XR2s were not even seen as a competitor of the Golf GTI.

Even the XR3 was not a competitor:

No power steering though, so it is a full body work out from turning corners to trying to brake
